With damper set at 4, drag factor is 117.
Is that within acceptable range?
Will hit 800k tomorrow morning.
Hoping for 1M by new year.
Cheers.
When I used to be coached during winter indoor training by a Yale coach, he always encouraged us to set the drag factor around 120. I think 117 is perfectly fine. But what is most important is find the factor that feels good to you. Once you find that match, use that drag factor when you switch ergs. Every machine is different. If you hop on a different machine and set the damper to 4, you may find a big difference in the feel of your stroke. Always check the drag factor if you use a different machine.

Image Day 17 or 18

Wowzer, mates! The whole Concept2 rowing community is putting in meters almost faster than they can be counted....just click on the refresh button when you're in your online logbook page and watch that thermometer level climb! We're almost at 12 percent as a rowing community! Whoop, whoop and HOOYAH ! This is good stuff you're doing while you row, row, row !! Many must be totally rearranging their days, evenings just to get some extra meters in for the counting. Thank you all for that !!

Meanwhile, back here at Reindeer Central, today's thermometer reading had a MINUS sign. Shiver me timbers and pass the hot chocolate!

Welcome back to Katerina! Always good to see returning teammates! Luna-Tics are making some great contributions to the overall Concept2 donation match of meters for $$$. Congratulations to Robyn, also, on putting in more than 200K meters in the Holiday Challenge....that's worth some antler lights AND the Concept2 pin!

Post by Kona2 » December 6th, 2011, 2:37 pm

Woohoo!! Cathie's reindeer Olive has powered through 310,000 holiday challenge meters! That means she's earned $ 10.40 in Concept2 donation $$$....and the coveted glowing red harness milestone (although I still think this must be the afterburners kicking in!)

This is probably not the right spot for this question, but I'm more interested in your opinions than the rest of the C2 board, so here goes:

The whole 60% of max heartrate for fat burning, 70% for cardio thing that is posted on every treadmill, where the max heartrate is defined as 220-age, has me wondering if I'm overdoing it when rowing. I row for meters vs time. The HR is purely a statistic that is interesting, but ultimately not what I'm concentrating on.

So at age 40, if I do a 30 minute row my HR will be 120 or so after the first minute when I'm doing a pace of 2:00 or better, then crawl up to 140 pretty quickly over the next couple of minutes, hit 150 by 10 minutes in, 160 around 15 minutes in and then sit there or go towards 170 depending on how hard I'm pushing myself. Generally the last 5 minutes will be around the 170 bpm mark for me.

So for fat burn, the treadmills (which I know are wrong, but it's just an easy reference) claim a HR of 108 (by the time I'm warmed up before I even sit down on the rower I'm well past that), and I'm at what is considered peak performance (153 on their chart) by the time I'm 10 minutes in and on a treadmill it is then suggested you stop and go easy as you shouldn't be at an HR that high while working out.

As such, I'm curious: What is your preferred HR while working out? Am I nuts for going for broke and see just how many meters I can push out in 30 minutes and should I be taking it easy and keep my HR low for most rows instead?
Wim (attempting to get back into rowing shape).

Thanks all for the well wishes and hugs you sent my way. It is sad to lose a teammate, but a great relief that they found him. The autopsy report has been released and he died of natural causes. He had an acute intracerebral hemorrhage (basically, he had a stroke). There was no struggle and no suffering. This makes all of us more accepting of his death. We now know he truly did die doing something he loved.
