The Holiday Challenge

Post by Kona2 » November 3rd, 2011, 12:16 pm

Image

This year's challenge (described below) brings us 31 days of opportunity to row meters - and, an opportunity to row enough meters to help Concept2 reach its goal of $30,000 for disaster relief, a donation Concept2 makes based on the number of meters rowed. This truly is a challenge where more is better....because once you pass the 100K mark, your meters are worth twice as much in the Concept2 donation to match our meters. Also note that our adaptive athletes, and kids under 16, can begin to earn this double your money rate starting at 50K...and we know that our Luna-Tic adaptive athletes can outrow just about anyone! We also know that this will be about the toughest $2 you ever earned (that's the donation for 100K rowed). In fact, this will give you a whole new perspective on what a $20 donation might look like. :D

Image

This could be the year.....Concept2 has always had the goal of $30,000 for the Holiday Chalenge...and so far, this goal has not been achieved. I'm going to put out a call to ALL the rowers, and all the teams and say "let's make it so." Concept2's notes in the logbook section say that there are 20,688 active members this season ... and something on the order of over 1200 affiliations. If just 15,000 active members met the 100K goal, that $30K would be on its way to funding Vermont disaster relief. And you could enjoy your holiday celebrations with little worry about caloric intake!

Image

Now the challenge says it's an individual challenge, but we've sure learned that there is a lot of power to make things happen when we row as part of a team. I encourage those of you who row at a gym to ask them to post the downloadable Holiday Challenge poster. Perhaps they'll even join our team!

Holiday Challenge

The Details

Row and/or ski 100,000 meters or 200,000 meters from November 24 to 11:59 p.m. ET December 24.
You do not need to be on a team to participate! Log your individual meters.
Indoor rower and SkiErg meters only (no on water/on snow meters please). You can combine meters from each machine to reach the challenge goal.
Kid's Holiday Challenge allows kids (aged 16 and under) to participate at 50,000 meters.
Adaptive athletes can choose to participate at the 50k, 100k, or 200k levels.
Deadline for entering meters: January 4th, 2012.

Row or Ski for Disaster Relief

For the 2011 Holiday Challenge, we'll be rowing and skiing for disaster relief organizations, both international and in our home state of Vermont, which was hit very hard by Hurricane Irene.

For every person who completes at least 100k during the challenge, Concept2 will donate $.02 for each kilometer (1000 meters) you accumulate to your choice of the following organizations:

Vermont Disaster Relief Fund
American Red Cross Disaster Relief (International)
Unicef—Emergency Relief Programs

Once you get beyond 100k, we'll donate $.04 per kilometer (for kids and adaptive athletes, the $.04 rate will take effect at 50k). The usual prizes of pin and certificate will be awarded as well.

Our goal through this group effort is to raise $30,000 to support these causes, and every bit adds up! Since adding the donation component to the 2008 Holiday Challenge, together we've raised over $80,000 for many great causes!

How to Participate

You must have an Online Logbook at concept2.com (it's FREE!) and all of your meters must be entered into your Online Logbook. If you don't already have one, visit the Online Logbook home page, click Register under New User and follow the directions. Kids Challenge participants need to set up an individual logbook (using a parent's email address is fine).
Under the Profile tab, enter your current mailing address. This is to ensure we have your correct mailing address for mailing your pin (see below for how to qualify).

Incentives and Rewards

The incentives and rewards available depend on which goal you achieve. Here's how it works.

200k, 50k Kids, and Adaptive

Participants who complete 200,000 meters, kids who complete 50,000 meters, and adaptive athletes who complete at least 50,000 meters are entitled to the following incentives and rewards:

A free downloadable certificate of achievement
A free downloadable heat transfer for making your own Holiday Challenge-wear
A free Holiday Challenge pin: Pins are sent automatically to the address on file in your Online Logbook. Please ensure you have entered a valid address in order to receive your pin.
Access to the Holiday Challenge shop through our third-party fulfillment vendor

100k Finishers
Participants who complete 100,000 meters are entitled to the following incentives and rewards:

A free downloadable certificate of achievement
A free downloadable heat transfer for making your own Holiday Challenge-wear
Access to the Holiday Challenge shop through our third-party fulfillment vendor

Woohoo and hooyah! Congratulations, Mario Jackson, on achieving your first one million lifetime meters! We wish you many, MANY more!

Pretty cool that Mario completes his 1 millionth meter at the age of 11 on 11/1/11 ....couldn't have planned it any better, Jackson !
CONGRATULATIONS :!: I remember what a thrill it was to get that very first 1 million. Way to go.
And congratulations to Jim K on the 2 million meter mark :!: You both are an inspiration :!: Maybe enough to get me back on the Erg today though I strained by back picking up and unloading one of by wife's furniture "bargains". It actually is a really beatiful piece of furniture-a solid oak wardrobe-but it wieghs a TON  I got it in the house, but it is going to be a challenge getting it upstairs. If only I could harness some erg power

Kona,
Thanks for the encouragement and the chuckle :D There's absolutely no way I would win the race in March  , as there are world class runners who participate, and I'm just not a natural runner, but it's a fun race with a really good Expo the day before (and who can resist free swag right?!), so we always make it a stayover in Jacksonville event.
I'm going to give the Holiday Challenge a decent effort, and hopefully exceed my expectations. I love a challenge, and it's definitely more fun participating now that I'm a part of the Luna-tics. :)

Question

Post by Jodi » November 4th, 2011, 11:51 am

Is there any way to get my PM3 to upload my total lifetime meters to my online log? My summary says that I have 1490385 meters, but my logcard only has 513646 and I think the online log reflects that number as well. I think that when I got serious about rowing (after my running injury earlier in the year) I deleted all of my old workouts from my logcard to free up space and start fresh. Did I lose all of those meters in my lifetime count?

I don't think you can get the PM3 to do this, but it looks like you could enter it online in your logbook as a bulk meter entry.

Well, I sure learned some things I didn't know! In your logbook, there is a section on the left menu called ranking FAQs and help. For some reason, I didn't connect ranking questions with other kinds of workout history, but that seems to be the right place for a lot of different things. Glad you asked! I think this might be the answer your looking for:

How can I add lifetime meters to the meter total in my logbook?
To enter all your life time historical meters:

Log into your online logbook.
Click History.
Under Historical Monthly Summary, click Add new historical monthly total.
Create one entry with a lump sum total by month or by year (use any date(s) prior to May 1 of the current ranking season). Remember to change the default date to the date you want entered.
Click Add.

When entering meters for the current ranking season (May 1 to April 30), it is best to enter each workout separately by individual date to allow for accurate average meters rowed statistics.

or...

The number of meters I've rowed in life do not match the lifetime meter total in my logbook. How can I correct my logbook total?
If you have many meters to enter that are from the current ranking year, you can add the meters as one bulk entry in your logbook. (You may want to make a note to yourself in the Comments field for that entry.) If the meters were rowed prior to May 1 (the beginning of the ranking year), then those meters must be entered as monthly totals under Historical Meters in the History section of your logbook.

Full Moon Over Arkansas

There it was...the telltale signature of a full marathon...that "195" at the end of a 53,195 m total. Could it be? A quick perusal of the world rankings for full marathon revealed the answer. Yesterday afternoon a full marathon (completed in 3 hrs, 28 minutes) was submitted from Mt Ida, AR.

Congratulations, Tammy, on completing a full marathon. I think it's a first! Dang, girl - you are a speedy rower!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.3.11

Hooyah! This team has the erg hammer down...milestones and celebrations happening ALL the time.

Image Another episode...

The phrase "bragging rights" jumped out at me. You can see why it would be eye-catching. We use it here every single day to talk about all the mega-meters generated. This was an article called "Competing for power: Bragging rights, prizes awarded to biggest energy savers" in the Denver Post today. Energy companies are starting to partner up with other companies to take advantage of the fact that "the human bent toward competition or bragging rights is 'almost primal.' " They're tapping into the power of combining data management and behavioral science to get people to reduce their energy usage by providing energy usage data that allows people to compare how they're doing within their neighborhoods.

Data management, social community that cheers each other on and celebrates milestones, checking to see how we're doing compared to our teammates, competing in challenges ... a primal need to row...I think we can tell the energy companies that they're onto something....and our ergs don't use watts, they just measure ours! :D

Season meters as of 188/365 = 67,135,241 m

Total meters on the day = 4,516,171 m (astrogator faints at these kinds of numbers)

Oars in space (participation) = 28 percent

Thanks from the Tamster, I can attest to the hard row she did. A bit of after row vomitus  .
Today is her 32 nd bday and she wanted to row a full marathon before she turned 32. I was amazed at her but glad Rog was here to clean up her mess. Sisters can be so gross :P

It does work. I had to do that same thing because I used a paper log book for a long time before looking at the online log.

Woo Hoo, Tammy on your marathon row! Way to keep to your goal! And Happy Birthday!
