Could try placing the rowing machine on a rubber mat - even if you have the machine on carpeted flooring, placing it on a mat (like you would have under an exercise bike) really quiets the machine down.
Try putting a pillow in front of the air duct by the erg?
You can also buy air ducts that can be opened and closed.

I still need to get a mat for the erg. The air ducts I've considered, but the machine is located underneath two air ducts in the basement and while they are closed, they're not exactly sound proof.

I will try a pillow in front of the air intake, where a pillow would actually help. Still, the ducts right above the machine are the more likely culprit.

Given that most of the noise from the erg is from the fan, I'm not sure how a rubber mat would reduce the noise level of the machine by any significant level. I could put padding in the vents, as long as I don't forget to remove it afterwards. And not sure how much it would actually help. I think the better option is to just find a better time to row and get used to not being at the wife & kids beck and call whenever they're awake. :) Now to convince my wife that it's better if I'm out of her hair for an hour a day...

maybe you can look into installing some noise dampening wall material. kind of like those sound studios do.
The cheap way is to staple gun egg cartons to the wall :D

Ask her if she prefers to sleep or to watch how you add another 5 lbs. ;-)
Trust me, this will work! B)

Hah. Best response.

Re weight gain, I've found that if I row an average of 12K a day, I can eat and drink whatever I want and not gain weight. (Now, weight loss, that's another story.)

Heh. Given that now that the weight loss challenge is over, I've been going nuts and ate a lot of crap in the last few days and gained a couple of pounds. I need to get back in balance (junk food vs calories rowed off) soon so that I don't explode :)

Turn the music up, usually masks the sound of the ERG! A bit of aka daka anyone?

Congratulations to all the milestones over the past couple of days...

This is very nerve racking :( Once again I want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Here's hoping for a good outcome, Ron. Waiting is always difficult - even when the team is sending a steady stream of good thoughts and lots of prayers your way - time seems to move sooooo slowly.
