Take care, Alison, as you work back into your rowing routine.
For me, every time I try to increase my speed, I seem to have problems, so I've just settled this old body into going a speed that feels totally comfortable, even though that means it will take me longer for the meters I want. On days when it feels right, I do 10-20 strokes at a slightly faster pace periodically. I am also working on stretching more following each rowing session. Shorter sessions, too, seem to cause fewer problems with my body.
Some weeks my knees or hip will bother me. This week, my left shoulder is acting up so I'm trying to focus on using good, even-sided form with each stroke. I'm hoping that as I become stronger and more lean, some of the problems will disappear. I'm just not rushing it.

Way to go, Sandi! Your half million mark is just around the corner!
Skunked while fishing yesterday, but we may try again after work sometime this week if we can find an evening when it won't be so WINDY! This is the second time this fall that we've been thwarted by strong winds, strong enough to create white caps on the water. I guess if the word "windy" is in any part of the forecast, we should postpone the fishing! Live and learn; this is the first fall we've actually tried fishing, so we're just figuring things out.
Hope this week's challenge inspires each of us to do just a little more!

Keep rowing team, just finished another 12k and feeling great. Had a great week-end, took a rest yesterday and today's rowing felt great. I'm working on setting some goals for my rowing.
Working hard to lose some weight and improve my fitness level for the upcoming skiing season, which today had the first snowflakes of the year flying around. Time to get the skis out and tune them up.
Any ideas and suggestions with my goals would be welcome.
Tomorrow's goal is to complete the Skeleton Crew Challenge!

Looks like a milestone is within reach!!!
100,000 meters is so close.
Goals ,are in my opinion, a personal thing.We set long term goals for ourselves and short term goals.It is important that we set realistic goals as well.Ones that we can definitely reach and not be disappointed in the outcome making the goals then..counterproductive.
From your enthusiasm..I can see very good goals and ones that you can reach.I think that each team member has their own goals and with this hectic world we live in..it is more difficult to fit the fitness goals in but they keep us healthy and centered to make it through each day!
You set a goal to finish the Skeleton Crew Challenge..awesome short term goal.
Your long term goal will be perhaps how many meters you want to row this season.That will be determined by how many meters you want to row each day.
Skiing season is a great way to boost those goals..you need really good leg muscles and upper body strength to ski.
I am a Personal Trainer and I at one time trained a few clients to get ready for the slopes.Rowing will help and you need to work those quads and hamstrings..get a good sense of lateral movement..hit the gym or work at home on the muscle groups that are so vital in good ski form.And don't forget the core!Good abs!!
Way to row , Michael and good luck on those goals and daily personal bests.
I finished my Challenge this weekend..felt good and now I can maybe double the challenge or beyond!!

Hi Michael,
Regarding the daily average meters Honors Boards, you are at a disadvantage because you have started logging meters so far into the season (just about half way). If you want to make it a goal to end up on a particular Honors Board (1500, 2500, 5000, 7500, 10000), you would have to row almost twice the daily amount each day to reach that goal by the end of April 2009.
For this season, it may be easier to set monthly or weekly goals in addition to the various challenges. The upcoming Holiday Challenge is one of my favorites because it has kept me from gaining weight during the holiday season. The January Challenge is another good one for burning extra calories, and before you know it, you'll be at the end of the season (April 30). It's much easier to set higher, daily average goals when you start right on May 1, as long as you stay committed and motivated. Belonging to a team has helped me remain much more motivated; I've never rowed this much during a season before!
My goal for the Skeleton Crew Challenge is at least 10,000 per day, but I'm working to row 15,000. I have to admit that it's easier for me to row more during a challenge.
Regarding weight loss, I've found that the more I row, the more I seem to want to eat, but my body fat percentage is going down little by little. Maybe that will help to make a difference down the line. I need to lose some weight in order to play tennis again (each pound of extra weight is 4 pounds of pressure on my knees); my knees were not doing well on the courts a few years ago.
