All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 10.21.2020

Armageddon. Or maybe Mordor. The East Troublesome fire grew by 100,000 acres overnight. When the national news is covering Grand Lake fire...that's the one. The beetle killed forests are providing fuel, and the winds are driving the fire and its embers north into Rocky Mountain National Park. The entire RMNP is now closed due to fire activity...and it is a HUGE park. Friends, family have been evacuated and many structures are burning. It is so difficult to watch, and yet you can't NOT watch. No idea what the property impact is - but the small, year-round community will be forever changed. It takes a long time to regrow a forest, but the upside is that the fire is probably what is needed for future generations to enjoy the land. Resilience.

Image Starts tomorrow......

The Skeleton Challenge of earning 31,000 m in the week of Oct 25-Oct 31 always ends on Halloween. This year, we have not only a full moon on Halloween, but it's a blue moon on Halloween since we had our last full moon on October 1. The second full moon in a month is called a blue moon. So. You all have some opportunities to celebrate this in many ways!

The apocalyptic fires continue to burn, and we are not out of danger. Yesterday the wind laid low, and firefighters were able to make some defensive progress. There are a lot of men and women volunteer firefighters (2300 of them!) fighting the two giant fires in Colorado, and they are amazing people of all ages. Some have lost their homes to the fire, and yet manage to stuff those emotions down to continue to focus on fighting the fire beast. Wind gusts over 70 mph have already been clocked this AM on some of the passes - and embers travel over a mile. Expecting 10-20 inches of snowfall over the fire zones Saturday night through Monday. There will be a lot of opportunities to help replant trees and do other volunteer work.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 10.25.2020

Post by Kona2 » October 26th, 2020, 11:20 am

What's happening with the fires? Our own Colorado Scary Times...

No one really knows how much snow it takes to put out big fires - just that it takes an extended amount of rainfall or snowfall to make it so. In early September, we had a two day snow. At that time, there was only the Cameron Peak fire. When people dug under the snow two days after the snow fell, the embers were still there...burning away. And so it is with the current two big fires even though we have had about 10 inches of snow in the fire areas. The much prayed for snow has given the firefighters a bit of a reprieve, and allowed for some additional defensive measures to be put into action. So far, 300 - 400 homes have been destroyed in the Troublesome fire. Our remote location is lakeside, surrounded on three sides by water. No one believes they are completely safe, but the homes in that area are those of families who have primarily been there for many decades...and all are still whole. We are thankful.

Short of moving your house to the great plains, Kona2, it sounds like it's pretty safe where it is. I hope that you and your neighbors make it through unscathed.

The video card was great :D
