Does your gym pull a lot of machines/benches/stations out of the line or use signage/police tape to discourage use? How is circuit training conducted? (I despise circuit trainers who use wrist watch shaming tactic. )

Does Liz have an add-on paddling mechanism for rowing machine? Does the gym supply? Curious how large the dragon boat Interest in Oz.

Hi Jack - Questions! Sorry to others if this is a bit long winded so just let it pass without a read!
We are in an unusual Covid situation here in OZ now - virtually no community infection for weeks now in everywhere but the state of Victoria where a surge has happened in the past few weeks and Melbourne (5million) is locked down for the second time and Victorians can't move anywhere. Overall there have been 107 deaths here since it started so we have done well so far. Victoria had another 200 cases yesterday for the 3rd day in a row.
Gyms in Sydney opened with a number of restrictions and precautions about 3 weeks ago and our gym has done it pretty well. Contactless entry and temp checks are done and sanitiser and wipes everywhere. Numbers in are counted and limited by floor area. Staff to just clean all the time and we wipe before and after. Cardio machines have been reduced and spaced with dividers between to help keep people apart. Weights machines are further spaced too.
Classes have limited numbers and must be booked and there are no circuit classes I think but haven't been.
Liz's DB club has the paddling erg attachment as part of their training and they are doing some land based training together but can't get on the water yet. Liz has been using the regular erg at home a bit too and going to the gym but no attachment there.
Dragon Boat is very big here and there maybe 20 clubs in Sydney alone and regular racing - Sydney is a very "Asian" city with one of the best harbours in the world. Her club had about 80 members before the pandemic - all ages and abilities but they take it very seriously. Her mixed 60+ team (of 20) is State and National champions - they had qualified for the World Club Champs in August in France until you know what happened. DB is also big with Dragons Abreast here and all around the world - a Canadian MD started it and all are breast cancer survivors.

Thank you for the reply, lindsay. Good to hear that the galloping croup is no match for Oz. Seeing reports that NZ also has had success stopping the spread. Apparently tying down the helm and everyone paddling at the same cadence is necessary to make way in troubled waters. Sort of like dragon boats. Best to Liz in her sporting life. :)

thanks Jack We have done really well and NZ too - they were able to shut down completely - small island and small population with total control of borders. It seems to me (and others of course) that countries that have done well acted early and went hard and the politicians listened to the scientists and did what they were told. Taiwan has had 6 deaths I think for those reasons - island control/act early/go hard. (and women leaders as in NZ)
We had very little dissent as well and both sides of politics on the same page working together as a national group of leaders who listened and acted strongly at the end of January into Feb. The opposite of UK US and Brazil amongst others
HOWEVER - this second surge phenomenon is amazing and started out of nowhere and has lead to the return to lockdown in Victoria. It has happened around the world now too - Japan, Israel, Spain for example
stay safe everyone!!

Hi all

Time slips past so fast these days, I somehow managed to miss a few days on the forum. Good to catch up on all the news, including the rollercoaster series from Cynthia! Sounds like it ended positively, so hoping for continued good news as time goes on.

On the virus front things are a little less controlled than elsewhere in the world. I don't think it has as much to do with non-compliance as with socio-economic challenges. People having to live in sub-optimal conditions, use public transport, and return to physical workplaces, will always increase the risk of transmission. My wife and I are fortunate enough to be able to work from home, and make use of delivery services, so count ourselves lucky at being able to reduce our risk to almost zero. Having my first choice exercise equipment available at home is just a bonus!

I finally cracked and shaved the lockdown beard off yesterday after 116 days. I suspect I can start it up again, and probably hit the same point before having a chance of getting back to the office. The US holiday in December is already looking like it will be cancelled, but we're still holding hope for Christmas with the UK family if the 14 day quarantine rules will be gone by then.

Did the BikeErg World Sprints last night. Targeted sub-8 min for the 4000m, but pushed harder near the end to finish with a 7:49.6. Didn't feel maxed out, so I think my 7:48 PB is about to go. Interesting that I seem to be faster on the bike, which might be pointing to my inefficient rowing technique as my inhibitor not my fitness level.

Forgot to add thanks for the contributions to the Aug CTC that have come in so far. To save scrolling, here is the current list that is still accepting entries...

Covid 19 - 19 x 30 secs, static start rep 1 then free for all. Total m's
4x500m r 2min - slowest interval to count (Jul 2007 CTC)
500m (only ever done 3 times in the CTC, last one was ours in 2011).
4x750 on 2’
4x150m/3'R, fastest and slowest counts
8x 888m/1' or 2'R 'cos its August?

I know I don't get a vote but how about 2020m because the year 2020 will be unforgetable.

Hello team, I’ve been a tad quiet for a while but thought it time to again say hello. Congratulations Captain Dave, and thanks Chris for keeping score and Henry for enthusiasm. I largely credit the CTC with my continued health; so thanks too to Doug and Joe and everyone else involved.
The good news is that I now have a brand-spanking new erg – a bit of a wait but well worth it. The not-so-good news is that today’s CTC at 2:05 pace r21 was not so pleasant, maybe a month or two of slow reconditioning is needed. Anyhow, It has been great to be a long-term Flyer and watch the team rebuilding, welcome to everyone. Cheers, Stephen

I think commemorating COVID 19 in any way is a bit flippant - 10's of thousands of people have died and continue to do so.
As a radical suggestion, why not do a meaningful workout, maybe even a ranking piece?
500m or 4x500m slowest counts, or Citroen's suggestion just bang out a 2020m?
Just my 2p's worth.

Adding my tuppence to Graham’s for the simple reason that “if mankind should survive “ and the CTC with it, a challenge commemorating one or more of our far-flung friends lost to the virus is possible in future. Should we do a “personal yardstick” workout without the CoVi spin?

Welcome back Stephen! Always good when team members find their way back to the thread and obviously the CTC. All scores are good, and you've given yourself something to have another couple of shots at :).

I think Graham makes a good point which I hadn't thought of up to know. For me personally the signs of lockdown are all around, but I only personally know a couple of people who have had the virus and shrugged it off like a mild flu. So the mortality side hasn't been a challenge for me to deal with yet.

I was getting excited that we seemed to be getting consensus early on, but maybe we can find a compromise.

I liked Citroen's idea around 2020, but didn't particularly like the distance which was too close to this month's event. I also saw the appeal of the multiple sprint interval option from Chris / Ewen.

So here's my compromise thought to throw onto the list:

A celebration of the bizarreness of 2020 - 20 x 20 seconds with 20 seconds rest. Difficult to settle into a rhythm which I think is a very appropriate metaphor for this year.
