Snazzy pace progression, Cynthia. Lit up the bulb in that third split you did!
I wish! But it seems like any time I start to really use my legs, I get the jolt of pain or, end up with the right hip/butt pain worsening considerably. So sedate rows are probably it for me. Better to be able to row slow on a more regular basis than rip one out and not be able to row for a month.

Even if the eventual injection helps calm the nerves, the underlying problems'll still be lurking when it wears off. I don't want to make things worse, that's for sure!

The hard part is not going all out when I'd really, really like to! I freaking HATE seeing my name last on that CTC leaderboard, LOL!

But I like being able to walk more! If the eventual injection doesn't work, probably looking at surgery to avoid permanent nerve damage in my legs. I hope an injection can help me move around a little more, with less pain for awhile. Maybe then I could lose weight a little easier. My doctor thinks weight loss might help some with my back, so I'm continuing.

On that front, I saw 193.2 for the second time this year this morning. So I think I'm making progress, just very slowly. When I hit 190, I'll take a maintenance break.

I know it's easy to say it, but the fact that you are on the leaderboard at all is something to be proud of. The vast majority of people wouldn't even bother.

Just the other day heard someone say “We DIDN’T DO ANYTHING to deserve THIS!” (CoVi).

We sure DIDN’T DO THIS ⬇️

Quickly everybody, let's start generating ideas before this one gets through! :)

Thanks Chris for kicking things off. I propose we generate some ideas over the next 10 days or so, and then put them to a vote over the week after that, which will give us time to finalise our choice and send through to Dougie a couple of days before the end of the month.

To help get your creative juices flowing, here is a list of what the Forum Flyers have chosen in the past since records were kept (generally reflecting our preference for the shorter stuff except for the Bob Spenger memorial in 2017):

Dec-08 4x250m r1:00 - slowest interval to count
Jun-10 5 x 5min r 2min
Oct-11 500m
Dec-12 10 x 1min r 1min
Nov-13 4 x 250m r 3 min (all standing starts)
Oct-15 15 x 1min r 1 min
Mar-17 5142m
Nov-18 11 x 111m r 1min

The main constraint is that it can't be too long, and most people should be able to finish within 50-60 minutes. Ideally also not too complicated to set up on the monitor.

I personally quite like the novelty of the sessions where the slowest interval counts, because you have to get your pacing spot on from the start. We don't see a lot of those, so that could be a consideration.

My proposals to add to Chris's:

4x500m r 2min - slowest interval to count (Jul 2007 CTC)
500m (only ever done 3 times in the CTC, last one was ours in 2011).

I like this one:

4x750 on 2’. Record total meters for 6’ rest. B) In example below 680m.

I like martins but I think I like the 4x 750/2R a bit more

What about 8x 888m/1' or 2'R 'cos its August?

Well, glad I rowed BEFORE the consultation appointment. The doctor's PA had me walk on tiptoes (possible) and attempt to walk on heels (only stayed upright by WILD flailing of arms) then she poked and prodded a bit, finding the VERY painful nerve in my right butt FAST! She tested my leg and foot strength a bit, but asked me NOT to give my best as it would probably have repercussions.

I am having some weakness in my feet. I asked if I'm in danger of permanent nerve damage, but she said she didn't think so yet. Me, I'm not so sure, having woken up with my entire left leg feeling numb and cold this morning. Usually, it is just my lower legs. Walking feels a bit weird today. And felt weird yesterday.

Pretty rocky on all counts after the poke and prod and hour and a half car ride round trip. Lots of pains everywhere in my legs. The normal stuff, plus random stabs in places I haven't usually been getting them. And more random stabs in general.

They have to get insurance approval before scheduling the injection appointment, which will be on both sides of my L5-S1.

I needed pizza and chocolate Tuesday, was not feeling like I could be on my feet long enough to fix food, so weight is up, but hopefully will come down, had calories under control yesterday.

As for August CTC, I can't guarantee anything. I don't know when the injection will be or if it will help. Currently feel in no shape to row. So don't feel ya'll have to make it a short row for my sake.

I was happy to see that my appointment was in a separate building from the hospital. Everyone was wearing masks. No one in the doctor's waiting room. Hubby said only one person came in while he was waiting for me. So minimal exposure.

But cases are going way up in our county, so it's a worry.

P.S. I got to see 'ground zero.' The PA showed me my MRI. She said that white areas around nerves are good and indicate space. Unfortunately, a lot of my nerves had not so much as a smidgen of white showing, just all dark. Which does explain the assorted nerve pains and the diagnosis of multiple pinched nerves. And why my doctor kept emphasizing how bad my back is.

What kills me is how I never knew a thing was wrong until it all went downhill last summer. You'd've thought I'd've been in dire straits before now. My golden years are looking kind of gray and grim!

The PA said that they sometime achieve some relief with a drug called Gabapentin, but it apparently has to be taken daily and has a sedative effect. I doubt that would work for me, because I'm sensitive to sedatives, go out like a light! When I had the fall and broke my wrists in 2018, I was prescribed Baclofen for muscle spasms and a quarter dose would put me out ALL night. Only took it when I absolutely had to.

So we are staying with the anti-inflammatory Celecoxib. On the plus side, I did see a news story that seemed to indicate that Celecoxib might help inhibit Covid-19, so maybe I have a little protection if I get exposed. Which I'm doing my best not to!

Can't believe no one's shoved me over the side of boat one yet! :D

Today, no cold/numbness when I woke. Or wrongness in feet!

A rowing day is a good day! So I didn't want to push anything, started out at my usual snailpace of 14 spm, then decided to see how SLOW I could go! There's more than one way to achieve a new personal best... :D

Pretty slow. Managed a stroke rate of 9 spm for several minutes! At least that's what the PM5 was saying. My force curve was next best thing to flatline. Ergdata apparently was flummoxed in utter disbelief and didn't record anything lower than 12spm, LOL! Eventually I ramped up to 18-19, then ramped back down to 9.

Managed 20 minutes! Smiling the whole time.

Watch the force curve and power. IIR, the record is 2Watts which is pretty much flatline. Glad you had some fun with it. Incidentally, it’s verboten to speak of 9spm as snailpace. Best referenced as snailrate or rating. What we’re dealing with here is amplitude of the effort rather than frequency with which repeated. Pace is the product of rate times power per discrete effort. Say Thankyou, Perfesser Knowitall. B)

Great story Cynthia - we are with you on this journey.
The slowest pace I have seen is around @7:30+ which is about 3 watts with a sr around 12

lizh did 2112m today at the gym - she is spending a bit more time there now as dragon boats are still out of bounds unfortunately as unable to stay apart both whilst launching and paddling - return plans are tricky.
Steady @2:28 ->> 2 boats afloat and the first one is 7th so far. nice one from Dirk too.
