Surprise, I just joined your team. I hope that's ok with you folks :D I realize I should have asked before joining but I had read several posts that said you were open to new members so I just took a chance. Let me know if I am guilty of breaking etiquette.

A little about me. New to concept2 machines however I have been an off and on rower for a few years. You can't tell by my times, though. I am rather slow. I paddled outrigger canoes when I was a teenager (many years ago) but that's the extent of my on water experience. I am a cardiovascular ICU nurse. Rowing helps relieve work stress and keeps my heart in shape.

I'm looking forward to contributing meters to the team.

Rubaiyat, I like your style. It's easier to ask forgiveness than to seek permission. Welcome aboard! Your meters are much appreciated.

Absolutely don’t mind sharing. My name is Stacia, 47 yo female.

I joined the team for the March 15 challenge. Was going to add myself to the CTC challenge as well but had questions before I did. Since I’m new to rowing workouts and terms. The 4 minutes rest, do you completely rest with no rowing activity or do you do recovery rowing during that time? And if you do recovery row, are meters during that time counted in total? Also, how are boat meters tallied? Is it an average of all the rowers? And are we allowed to update meters multiple times before the end of the challenge?

I did a practice 4x4 and my distance was terrible. I didn’t add it yet as I hope to improve before the challenge is over. Embarrassed haha

Hi Stacia and welcome - hope we can help you make the improvements that are on their way.
Where are you based in the world?
The challenge says that the first 4' is a standing start and the other three can be rolling - that means you can paddle slowly before the next interval appears and a few strong strokes before the time ticks over. You don't count the rest meters just the active ones in the 16'. Each challenge will make their own rules and we all compete for the right to the next challenge. (there is a CTC thread here on this Forum to show the rankings)
If you are not aware of the PM setup you go to new workout >> intervals >> intervals time then put in 4' and 4' rest by using the arrows. After you have done 4 push stop and then go to memory and the total meters will be there in the summary. The rest meters are separate at the bottom.
To enter the CTC meters you need to set up your profile and nominate forum flyers. The entry is a bit clunky as you have to go in a second time to confirm it. You can enter as many times each month as you like - it often takes a couple of attempts to get the pacing right and do a good one. The virtual CTC boats are made up of 3 HWTs (m/f) and a lwt (m/f) and a woman (for you the barrier is 62kg between hwt and lwt). As you enter the members of the "boat" are shuffled around and more boats are floated. They are ranked by the average of the 5 and will rise as faster entries raise the average. Female rowers are something we always need and any entry will be guaranteed to 'float" a boat so just go for it.
You shouldn't ever be embarrassed by your performances - you are already well ahead of the majority of the population and should see rapid improvements for the next 12 months at least. The good news is that you can use the rower for the rest of your life and improve for many years. (I have seen a 95yo lady still racing!)

Welcome Andrew (Brown), our second Andrew (at least) after Andrew (Crystal). Good to have you aboard! Did my CTC this morning. Hard work, but got it done. With a furious last 4' I averaged about 2K + 0.9-2.0 (depending on which recent 2K I reference). Don't intend to do it again as I doubt that I could do any better.
Yes welcome Andrew and just go for it!
Rick I am not surprised that you think that is max attempt - from what I can see 2k +3 pace looks like a good benchmark so very well done indeed

(…..and interestingly when you did the same challenge last time in jan 2017 it was @1:57.0 and this time @1:56.7 so even more impressive 3 years down the track)

Stil no rowing for me, my rower is still broken. Did skierg and that picked up a bit, was closing in to Pr territory. Felt overall a bit better, pains started to ease off. Right shoulder still mhe though.

Tuesday, I ate something bad, foodpoisening, really really upset stomach, saw the toilet very often, could not eat for days. Lost a lot of weight, but am eating again...

Bad new from my mother, she needs open heart surgery... pretty out of the blue. Not feeling good about this :? And in the current Corona situation she can,t get visit. So can only talk over the foon. Hoping for the best.

And last, just now, over here, the Netherlands, everything is in lockdown, only the shops are open, so more or less home locked, three weeks for starters.....

Thanks Yankeerunner:)
I just did my CTC as well - 3830m - not quite sure what that would be for a 2k reference as I haven't rowed that distance for a while... Like you, don't intend to do it again as a) couldn't really go much faster and b) it was too much like hard work:)

Welcome on board, Andrew!

I'm going to plagiarise a post of mine from a while back to save some typing (need to get this type of thing up onto a team website one day)...

There are 4 events that are running simultaneously, and they all need some form of separate sign-up:

Firstly, the general team affiliation runs throughout the season - you'll need to choose "Forum Flyers" as your Affiliation under your log book profile (this is different to "Team" which is needed for the 2nd event), and then all your metres will accrue to the Forum Flyer total.

Secondly, the World Erg Challenge needs you to join the "Forum Flyers (since 2005)" team, which is under the Teams heading on the log book. And then you need to join World Erg Challenge so that your metres contribute to the challenge.

Thirdly the Cross Team Challenge will need another login to be set up. The sign up process is apparently a little fiddly with the occasional odd error message, but it sounds like if you keep trying it will eventually let you join, and then it's seamless from then on. Others who've signed up more recently might be able to add more to this. Once you've done that month's challenge, and entered it onto the site, the allocation to specific Forum Flyers boats will be done automatically (each boat needs at least 1 female, 1 lightweight, and the rest can be filled with anyone, including the fat boys like me).

Finally, if you're still reading, there is the Indoor Rowers League where the best 8 age-adjusted times from a team of 10 will be used for that month's leaderboard. Look for "High Flyers 18" as the 8on8 team name when registering. [I don't think we filled all the spots at the start of the season, but if it looks full then just wait for the new season to start and we'll sort out the teams properly then.]

Feel free to ask more questions if my list has caused more confusion!

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Dave. I think I am - mostly - done with the tasks, but struggling with one of them... I've changed my affiliation and team for the March challenge - no problem there. Also did the CTC thing - as you mentioned it was a little fiddly, but has worked in the end (albeit a lowly 3800 or so). However, for the IRL, I can find Forum Flyers as the IRC club, but there is no option to pick anything in the 8on8 team name that could see - as such, maybe it's full for now as you mention...?

Nice one Lindsay. Good use of your time zone advantage!

I'd forgotten it was the 15th today, but happy to have some metres to report too because I did the CTC. Wasn't as horrible as I thought it might be. I was shying away from 2k + 2 pace thinking that it was a bit much for now, but after my warm up I figured I'd go for it and see how many intervals I could survive at that pace. In the end I managed to flat pace it almost perfectly on target, and got 4008m made up of intervals of 1001m / 1002m / 1002m / 1003m. Final heartrate of 186 bpm, so maybe I could have squeezed out a little extra sprint at the end, but I was feeling pretty stretched by then. I think the BikeErg long distances are helping with the aerobic base.

Sorry to hear about your mother, Henry, but also glad that you're getting a bit of good news on your training front.

The SA government just announced a big travel lockdown tonight which will be stopping my parents travelling to visit us on Thursday. They were going to be flying via Schiphol, so it was looking at risk for a while now with all the virus developments in Europe. We had our first case at work this week, but fortunately the individual hadn't returned to work after a trip to Europe, so we're not exposed yet.

Good work Andrew. Saw you entered a CTC distance just before I logged one tonight. On the IRL, I don't think we can change members after the first month, so we'll have to plan our team entry when it kicks off again later this year. But thanks for getting in on the team challenge and affiliations, so you've ticked all the boxes now.

Good luck with the weight loss project Cynthia - it's a great thing to do - there are some really inspiring stories around here and the erg is a great part of the process.
I was banned briefly yesterday too - the great Dena from C2 said that it was a spam attack and others were affected too. All over now.
The internet is an amazing thing in good and not so good ways.
Thanks, yes, it seems to have been a short, one-time incident. It was just scary at the time. No troubles since.

Sorry I've not been around, I had the bright idea of cleaning the bottom floor of my husband's closet. Well, I didn't think it would be a very big deal, just get things out, vacuum the floor, put stuff back. But it turned out to be a 3 hour project as he'd not protected anything from dust and everything in there was absolutely filthy and coated. I knew it needed vacuuming, but had not done so, because stuff was just a huge jumble in there. But I finally couldn't take it anymore. MY closet is clean!

I was careful about how I picked up the heavier items and I don't think the lifting caused issues, I think it was simply the length of time I was on my feet dealing with vacuuming and dusting everything off. I ended up with 8000 steps on my Fitbit that day, TWICE my norm!

It was crazy. His suitcase had glass shards in it!!!!! I guess once he visited his sister and had the bright idea to bring back a glass-framed picture in his suitcase. Um, no, not the way to transport breakables, sigh. So that had to be thoroughly vacuumed. It was also full of various junk food. FROM THE 1990s! I ask you...!

Long story short, I survived the day, but feeling worse as I went and I've had a LOT of nerve pain since and no rowing has been happening. I've just been taking it easy, trying to eat healthy, taking my meds and hoping it calms down. Seemed better yesterday, and I was looking forward to rowing, but it's been bothersome today. I'm hoping maybe to try rowing tomorrow, but only if I'm not having pain.

It's like I go one step forward towards calming things down, then something flares me up and I'm down for a couple weeks. It's very discouraging and scary too. On the plus side, I've kept eating under control and lost a bit more weight.

Just a quick post to say hello. I joined the team today and will certainly be doing my best to contribute as many metres as I can😊.

I mainly row to keep fit – plenty of pounds to lose – so I generally row every day. I rowed semi-regularly on my C2 a while back, then didn’t for a while, then started again some months ago. I cover at least 3k every day, although try to go further than this when I’ve time before work; I usually aim for 125k to 200k per month, give or take. In the summer months here in the UK I also try to cycle most days and sometimes, when keenness overtakes common sense, will do a short run too.

Looking forward to all the challenges and keeping up the motivation for the rest of the year and for years to come😊.

All the best
Andrew
I'm in the plenty of pounds to lose boat as well, so don't feel alone! But losing is doable, I'm about to turn 63 in a month and I'm doing it. 25 pounds last year, 2 pounds since taking a maintenance break this year. I have to control it mainly through eating, as I have really bad back issues, so exercise doesn't always happen. But either way, you can do it!

Don't be embarrassed, wait until you see how slow *I* row! Welcome aboard! I'm pretty new to it all as well. But rowing has helped my bad knees at age 62. I just wish I could do more of it, but age is catching up with me fast, i.e. really, really bad back to cope with.

The Corona pandemic affects us all, here in Austria we're in about the same situation, only leave home for (very important) work, food, medicine.
