Thank you for the birthday wishes! It will be a day of friends and family...and some golf! Somewhere in there, I plan to get 6666 birthday meters completed - because birthday meters are the best!

Image Great use of a hay roll (I call them triscuits)...

Deer, although they have always looked kind of smaller to me, are not all that small. In fact, they seem bigger than a bicycle. Barr Lake State Park is known for birding with lots of pelicans (LOTS of pelicans), eagles, osprey, herons and egrets that you can see from multiple observation points. Seemed like a great opportunity...especially when the descriptor said there was a 9 mile bike path around the lake. Good stuff. Loaded the bike onto the hitch carrier (best thing ever to not have to lift a mountain bike to the roof of the vehicle!), and off I went. There were a lot of things rustling in the trees and brush at this park, and there were a lot of goathead thorns to avoid. I was focused more on watching where I was riding at different points of the journey around the lake. So much so that I totally did not expect Bambi's mom to sproing out of the brush right in front of me, bounce along the path for 40 yards or so, and plunge back into a meadow. It was one of the coolest moments I've had riding a bike...and if wildlife has to pop out of the brush in front of you when you're on a bike, I'm so glad it was a deer and not something with bigger teeth, fangs, claws and a bad temper.

The blinking lights...things you may never see on your PM monitor....

Image Back of PM5 monitor

Image Box frame assembly of bike erg ...near the flywheel...

Image Another episode....bunny trails of the mind

Back in a far away day, my dad had a very fancy stereo system. He put a small brass sign near the control panel that said something like this:

Das maschine ist nicht fur der gefingerpoken und mittengraben! Oderwise ist easy to schnappen der springenwerk, blowenfusen und poppencorken mit spitzensparken.

While the signage was humorous, he got his message across: Don't mess with it. Fast forward into today's world when we're encouraged to pay attention to all the little indicator or status lights for our computers, vehicles, etc. And so it was with some delight and an air of throwback mystery that yesterday's bike erg session (I am so used to saying bike ride...but it isn't) produced a new finding...there's a blinking green light on the erg box frame once you get the flywheel spinning. Ha! I couldn't find anything in the manual that talked about what that green light was representing. Similar lights on a vacuum cleaner show that the belt is on and things are working. When in doubt, call Concept2.

I talked with Will at Concept2 this AM, and he says guess what...there's an indicator light on the back of the PM5 too, and you never see it. Like the stoplight systems we use, green means things are working and you know about amber and red. The enginerds put the status lights there to guide our diagnostic ways. Naturally, I will be figuring out how to get a mirror into position so I can see that indicator light power up when I fire up the ergs. Naturally. Because I am curious by nature and attribute. So. You, too, have indicator lights on your performance monitors...and maybe you noticed already...

Ah, yes, those elusive Denver ocean breezes! Wait, what?

I just had two glasses of iced cold brew coffee. (A new project ... cold brew coffee.)
I should probably do today's rowing RIGHT NOW. Major caffeine rush!

Good idea! Then you'll be done before prosecco time.
