For me it will be difficult to lot a lot of meters. Yesterday I almost cut of the tip of one of my fingers of my right hand. Rowing will be on low level for some time.

Thanks Lindsay. I will tell Carel. And I expect he will introduce himself one of these days. We have contact on a regular basis. Thank you Henry. Will take care. Hi to all of you, I'm Carel Doreleijers and I do apologize not introducing myself earlier. Sports suit me better than computers I guess..
In my younger years I was a triathlete. I was focused on the Dutch championships 1994 for 2 years and trained 4+ hours each day (evening rather, I also have a time consuming job). I did anything for the race. Then just a few weeks before the big race during a tiny little "getting-into-the-rythm-1/4 triathlon" I had an accident and a skull base # (during the start of the swimming part...) Luckily they saw me going down and got me out of the water, but that was the end of my triathlon career.
After my recovery I just continued running and swimming, the cycling training was too much time consuming.I became a long distance runner, the marathon was my favorite distance. Was among the fastest 50 Dutch marathonrunners. Which is not that much of an effort; The Netherlands is not that big. But most of the guys were at the age of 25-35, I was the only 50+. Maybe I should have started serious marathonrunning earlier.
After recent foot-surgery I didn't recover very well. Running is still very hard. To get rid of my excess of energy I started on a rowing ergo last summer (and skiff which I prefer but is too much of a fuss every day and not too compatible with Dutch winters). And I do like it!!!
Through Rolf Boers, a friend I learned to know at the OTW club I joined, I got involved into the Forum Flyers in august 2017. Thanks for having me!
In May we'll take part in the " Elfstedentocht" in the north of The Netherlands. Which is originally a 200km ice-skating race but these days it is also possible to do races on bicycle, inline skates and.. rowing. The World Erg Challenge fits very well into my training schedule. And I do like it to help our team out with some extra km's.

Hi Carel - great first post - welcome! You're C2 challenge and CTC contributions are most impressive.
I'm interested in your running - what times were you achieving for the marathon, and did you try longer distances also ("ultras")? I've been trying to get into running recently (well since last September), but I find it very easy to get injured - basically, I did little exercise for many years in my thirties-forties, and therefore I'm prone to picking up a sprain or strain due to the high impact nature of running, and also due to not having yet developed the necessary muscles to keep joints tracking correctly. In contrast, I can jump on my bike and go for a 40km ride with no problems at all.

Hi Paul, I never went beyond the marathon distance because of the risk of injuries and my goal was to improve my Marathon result. My PB is 2:38 and 1:15 for the 1/2M. I trained over 7.000km a year, a bit too much for my achilles tendon which was forced over an exostosis on my heel bone, the cause of the problem that didn’t have to do that much with running.Paul N wrote:Hi Carel - great first post - welcome! My advise to you is very simple, good running shoes and soft surface can make a world of difference. And pay attention to the warming up, which is a good advise for myself too actually..

2:38 - wow! You would be able to qualify for some (most?) of the major marathons as an elite, never mind the good-for-age categories!

Thanks Paul. Earlier this month I did a training session of 10 km I will register this as my IRL result. No real IRL attempt but at least something. And I expect to be back on the erg somewhere in april.Paul N wrote:

In homage to the Pilot Gig World Championships at the end of April, a challenge over four races.

Rolling starts are accepted after the first 2k - aim for this one is total time accured for all distances together. With a nice rest before the last full empty the tanks 500m.
