Yes the ladies came thru. Few more guys and gals would mean potential for IX or X boats floating every month. Looks likely to happen with the addition of Paul and Stephen.

Re: Forum Flyers
Happy New Year all!
I was surprised to see that I made it to a floating CTC boat last month. I decided to skip taking another shot at the challenge, seeing there was no chance of beating the team mate ahead of me, and I assumed that we wouldn't drum up enough ladies at the last minute. Next time I'll be more optimistic!
I opened the new year's metre account with a 2000m test just to see where I stand before getting stuck into a proper training plan. The 8:19.7 was a season best, and slightly ahead of a time I did around the same stage in my first phase of indoor rowing (counting days from when I started in 2004). Based on the past data I should be able to get to sub-7:30 by December (which should keep me away from last place at BRIC if I go). I was doing the RowPro training plans at that stage, so hopefully a couple of Pete Plan cycles now will give similar / better results.
Cheers
Dave

Dave, with nearly a full yr. until BRIC '18, you should talk to fellow Fliers and others about saving the Pete pressure cooker until a couple months out from the comp. Lindsay, Piers Newman, John Adcock, Rohan Dennis have recent experience with prep and peak and will be able to give you some ideas about the virtues of periodized training schemes.

Ok. Think I've sorted it. It appears the calender is not on my local time. So I'm a day behind. My workout on the 1st shows as the 31st Dec

Thanks for the challenge, which made me relook at what I'm trying to get from a training plan. Given that I'm some way from my peak, and I did 2 x 3 week cycles of the Pete Plan in the run up to my PB in 2008, it seemed a good choice for me (will have past session data to compare to, and I also remember liking the variation in the types of sessions). At this stage I need structure more than anything else. Looking at the PP site it does seem to describe itself as what I need - structure with a focus on continuous improvement rather than being a periodic training plan.
I think you've raised a valid point though, and I need to look at the whole year (11 months actually) and pick what I want to do, and when. I might get stale if I keep doing 3-weekly cycles all the way to December. I also have a couple of tricky months at work scattered through the year when training volume may take a knock, so I should factor these into the calendar.
Looking back at my past training plans, I did the RowPro 2k ones before mixing marathon training in with the C2 Interactive Plan which seemed to give me the bulk of my gains back in the day (although I do remember preferring the PP distance-based approach rather than the IP time-based sessions).
Some thinking needed, so probably a good time to do that this week before work takes over again!
Cheers
Dave
Re: Forum Flyers
In 2016 I did four rounds of the Pete plan on the run up to BRIC. For me that was too much, and at the BRIC I was 6 seconds down on my pb a month before.
In 2017 I tended to do 45 minutes at 2:07 three or four times a week along with various c2ct etc, but very little does work. A month before i improved my pb by 1 second. I didn't increase my speed work in the run up to BRIC so I didn't have any sharpening effect but I did manage to be only 0.8 outside my pb at 7:10.3 this year I will try and sharpen but I am wary of over doing it like I did in 2016.

Thanks for those thoughts, Piers. At this stage I think any regular sessions will benefit me, but I need to plan the 2nd half of the year more carefully than I had initially expected to.

Fantastic: my 3rd CTC completed, enjoying the company of Dave and Jack once again, and scoring a few points for the second timelindsayh wrote:out of the blue we have six boats afloat - well done all and especially Jean G I suspect
I see you pipped me for the 8th spot in the Dec IRL Dave. I'm certainly going to be no good at the Jan 1min sprint - only done it once previously - 252m - power not my thing. The 3.5k Jan CTC should be much more my thing, though very odd rowing to rest ratios this time...

Mega-congrats on completing the BPP Chris - I've had a look at your log every now and again to see how it's going and greatly admire you for sticking with it despite some very tough sessions.IMHester wrote:Welcome Stephen!
I joined the Flyers in January of this year when I purchased the Model E! Right from the start these folks were very helpful, knowledgeable and supportive. Great team to be a part of.
I'm fairly new to rowing which is to say I've been doing it for a year consistently so I'm in a similar boat of struggling with weight loss. Some of the folks on here suggested the Beginner Pete Plan so I tried and failed in the early part of 2017 but started over in July and just completed it this week! It's probably not for everyone but I liked it because I could still get it done with my work schedule and made me stick to a schedule.
I'd offer my advice but these guys/gals are far wiser than I so I typically stay in the background and hope to score some points for the CTC
Here's to us getting healthy on the erg!
Also huge congrats on your first (completely epic) HM; and on 1M lifetime metres logged. Now into 2018; keep going strong!!

Hi All and Happy New Year!
Thanks for the welcome! Lindsay, I am from Ottawa Canada - officially the coldest capital in the world a few days in the past month. We braved the -31C to skate on the outdoor rink on Parliament Hill yesterday with our teenage boys. It was brisk but a nice way to ring in the New Year.
I have read through many of the posts on this group. I was concerned that rowing would be a lonely sport done in my basement gym but it looks like this group will align well with my social side.
For my training, I am committing to 3 days minimum rowing and I will do the Pete Beginner Program. I have to fit it in with a hectic work and family life while maintaining my 5K daily walks. I have been walking 5K an average of 4 days per week for the past year and have lost very little weight. By adding in rowing and committing to documenting what I eat, I am confident that I will celebrate my 54th birthday next December 60 pounds lighter and more physically fit!
Regarding getting on a boat with other members, I feel I should see how I fare with the Pete Beginner Plan and the rehab on my arm. I would hate to join a boat and have to tap out as the only female and have others lose out on a challenge. At this point, I am too new...I will be sure to get "on board" when the time is right though!
Hope everyone has a great week! Happy Rowing.
Lisa

Re: Forum Flyers
Sorry about that! I didn't check the IRL standings before the session, but just wanted to have a proper 5000m session to see where the fitness stood. It had been a couple of months since my last one and I had been doing a lot of long, slow stuff as part of the Holiday Challenge. I managed to pace it pretty well - flat 2:11/12s until the last 200m where I managed to get to 2:00 pace. Had a few "backoff now" feelings during the middle, but felt good to push through and keep going.Paul N wrote: I see you pipped me for the 8th spot in the Dec IRL Dave. I'm not sure where I'll be on the 1 min. I've tended in the past to be better on the shorter stuff than the long rows, even at my old peak, but haven't done one of those in a couple of years. Will be a chance to sprinkle a couple of these through the month after a steady row session.
