LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
New to rowing - need a team for encouragement
Hi there...My name is Taylor (the girl type) I am new to rowing other than some former experience in crossfit about 5 years ago. I moved from San Diego to Chicago in spring of 2014 and my fitness level steadily dropped because of my inability to cope with the climate here. I have also gained 30 lbs and I was starting to see signs of depression. I knew I had to do something drastic. I bought a Concept 2 on Amazon in mid July and plonked in down in the middle of my living room, making it impossible for me to make excuses. So far its working but I wanted to be a part of a team. I finished the Dog Days Challenge despite only having 3 days home this week to get in my 40k. I travel with my job so there are times when I won't be able to row. This past week while gone, I found myself really missing it so I think I am hooked. I am a former distance runner and road cyclist. I think I am wired for long, repetitive activity. I turn on a movie and just row through it. I am not trying to be fast, just focusing on rowing properly. I would like to find a place in Chicago to get some training if anyone knows of such a place. Thanks so much. I hope I can contribute to the team in some small way.

Hi Taylor
Welcome to the team.
We are a mixed bag of folks here. Some row a lot of meters and some are probably faster. There is no requirements to be a member. We love recognising milestones and accomplishments. Feel free to ask questions and I’m sure you will get some great advice. Some of the folks here have rowed over 30 million meters. Nope, not me. Grin.
I think the most important thing to remember about the stroke is as you do the stroke say, legs, back, arms. Break it in to 3 movements that flow together. Not just all at one time. Personally I find my lower back gets tired a lot faster and gets to hurting if I do all three movements at once.
One of my rowing buddies says “rowing is great, you can learn it in one day and spend the rest of your life perfecting it.” I rowed 4 million last season and I’m still working on technique. Keep your head up too. It will help keep your back straight. Every meter is a good meter.
Have fun and just Keep On Rock’n.

You can find quite a lot of information on the web.
In particular, there is an Interactive Program Guide, with a wealth of information. Here is a direct link to a section within that Guide on technique:
https://indoorsportservices.co.uk/training/technique
There are also numerous videos available regarding technique. I just picked one here, but you can find more:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ82RYIFLN8
If there is a way you could view yourself rowing (with a mirror, or recording), you might find that helpful.
If you really want to take a class, I'm sure you can find many in the Chicago area, although I don't know how convenient they are to you.
I did a search, and saw a few links:
http://www.ironandoar.com/
... To be continued, since there is a maximum number of links I can reference in one post ...

I also saw you have an IndoRow in Chicago. I remember reading good things about them a while ago, but they use a WaterRower, so probably not the best choice if you want to learn technique for a C2.

Well August has certainly been a spectacular month on several levels...and look at all the meters we've been putting into our meter piggy banks! Welcome, Taylor...and here's wishing you many good erging sessions, and much good camaraderie !
It took some time to hunt through the Dog Days finishers summary, and I am hopeful that I didn't miss anyone. It's not an intentional miss if it happens! There are so many good things about the new logbook format, that it seems not right to fuss about some of the things I would still like to see incorporated.... Great to see the last minute push for finishing by several teammates! After all, why would you throw away all the time you've invested!

It sure was! It was my first 1/2 marathon, I started rowing a month or so ago and I'm loving every minute of it! Former distance runner and cyclist so it definitely fits for me. After I get a few more of these under my belt I want to start doing full marathons.Matthew R 21,097 m ....he moons us! Is it a first ever?

The pumpkins may still be small and green in the fields, yet Fall is approaching with some speed and color. First it was just that occasional tree with some splotches of yellow (we don't do orange very often here in the Front Range area)...get ready, mates! The orange season is almost upon us !!
Welcome to new teammate Patrick H - we wish you many, MANY good erging sessions and much good camaraderie!
Fall Team Challenge

There are prizes for those who reach either of these distances, as well as a prize draw for all clubs with at least ten participants reaching 100,000m. To either start or join a team, visit the Teams page of your logbook.
Full instructions can be found on the Fall Team Challenge page.
Club challenge means that we are not eligible as a virtual team for prizes. We enjoy ALL Challenges anyway !!

I moved from San Diego to Cincinnati, mmfmfm years ago. I also did a lot of road cycling, but not racing. With weather, kids, etc. I can't do it so much, but rowing is great, and I can do it whenever.
There is no need to fast, or to go any particular number of meters. I would just set some goals for yourself, and keep at it.
