How do frigatebirds sleep?

This comment is not completely a non-sequitur in this group, that sees many people accomplishing things, making others wonder, how do they do it.
That thought popped into my mind more than once as I was reading about these frigatebirds.

By the way, notice that I did spell "apologise" with an 's', rather than a 'z'. Happy Canada Day !!
a belated thanks for the link :] amazing...and ..eh....a belated happy canada day...so sorry i'm late again :]

Like our million meter celebrations, fireworks will soon be lighting up the skies..! Holiday weekends tend to overwhelm small mountain towns - with the conundrum being that this is also the time the local merchants make their $$$. Water levels in the nearby lake are quite high - and that means that the water nearest the shore is going to have a lot of hidden weeds and things. In an overly active imagination zone, one could easily imagine that there were eels and stuff in there (not possible, but still - and danwho please don't find any articles that say it is possible!). And so it was that a different lake was chosen as the site of the inaugural swim of the two youngest pups. After all, they are not the only ones that have to get in the water for this event. The chosen lake is for non-motorized boating activities only - another plus. Duluth Moose would approve.

PS
Can't assume that all retrievers will be natural swimmers. Oldie Goldie Kihei was in big trouble on her first swim - hitting at the water instead of paddling through it with those great big webbed feet. K9 Kona went in and rescued her in a moment that is unforgettable. The two who are the next generation are good swimmers, but will be using their life jackets for the deeper lake.

Image Happy July 4th!

Early reviews of the 2016 movie Independence Day: Resurgence on the site Rotten Tomatoes suggest that it's a splat with only 31% favoring it on the Tomatometer. Contrast this with the 1996 Independence Day movie with Will Smith earning 61 percent favorable ratings! Sometimes the new glossy visuals just aren't enough to carry the day or the movie! Still, will we watch it? You betcha!

In the middle of all the fireworks celebrations, NASA was having its own magnificent milestone as spacecraft Juno entered Jupiter's orbit! Let the exploration begin!

Image Another episode....

Juno's voyage (and our own Lunie journey) made me think about the differences between explorers and adventurers. Urban adventures or microadventures are "in" these days with many referencing British adventurer Alastair Humphreys. From his website: "As well as expeditions such as cycling round the world, walking across India and rowing the Atlantic, Alastair was named as a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for his pioneering work on the concept of microadventures, trying to encourage people to get outside, get out of their comfort zone, go somewhere they’ve never been. A microadventure is an adventure that is close to home, cheap, simple, short, and yet very effective."

Some of these microadventures are scavenger hunts where different clues lead you to see the sights on walking or biking tours (aka Exploring Old Sacramento), and some of them merely require changing your point of reference by getting to your destination using a different transportation form...maybe it's a bike if you usually drive, or the train, etc. Some lament that the "explorer gene" is waning in the US population. Still, there is an element of adventure in a carefully planned exploration! I thought Josh Bernstein's blog on the difference between an explorer and an adventurer was interesting...maybe you will think so, too:

http://www.joshbernstein.com/site.php?/ ... dventurer/

I'm pretty sure I fall into the Explorer category...in fact, I'm going to give orienteering a try...astrogators should know star map navigation... :D

Words of encouragement are things we all need...and sometimes they come from your electronic devices. I've had several Fitbit devices through the years - and must admit that even though these devices can have epic fail moments, it's the words of encouragement that pop up when you unplug the device from its charger that I look forward to almost as much as the step count totals. The screen display on these devices is pretty small...but somehow Fitbit has programmed a fairly large vocabulary into its software updates. What kinds of phrases or words of encouragement? Here are some examples: HOWDY...LOVE YA...STEPGEEK....MOVE IT....READY?...LET'S GO...WOOT (one of my favorites!)...YOU ROCK....SMOOCHES (snort).... Now if our ergs could give us words of encouragement....

It's the little things! :D

400 K Thor....not as close to the half million as Jean is....

Working on it. Grin. Jean suggested a book. I am reading it and seeing if it works or not.
Slow Burn: Burn Fat Faster by Exercising Slower
Stu Mittleman Katherine Callan
This is a long distance runner's perspective on burning fat and increasing one's health. I read this book as I am tired of being tired. Often after a workout I am ready for a nap. I need to have great energy to do what I want to do with my days. I am hoping this different, slower approach will help me. I also need to fix up the diet. Boy! do I need to fix up the diet!
My thoughts on the book are: I think the information is good. A long read though. I track my workouts anyway so I can compare results with what I had previously and also I know what it felt like before and I will be able to compare energy. The other side of the coin is, once I clean up the diet I changed one more huge factor that wasn't in place when I was doing the UT2 10K and inverval workouts. I still have to read more of the book but I think I am supposed to keep this slower pace and a lower HR for 12 weeks before adding intervals. As always, much to learn.

Have fun and keep on rock'n and row'n.

Thor, it's a fun race, isn't it? I'm sure you will leap ahead soon enough.
Yes, I endorse that book; it's a good read. Stu Mittleman basically follows the MAF method, and the book discusses his journey from fit and unhealthy, to fit and healthy. I'm actually trying to adopt the MAF method, developed by Phil Maffetone. His books are very informative on health, fitness, and nutrition. His approach is very different from the old "no pain no gain" methods of working out. I highly recommend any of them. I know I have a lot more energy now and don't get the sleepies after a row. For anyone into podcasts, you can hear interviews with Phil Maffetone on the Endurance Planet podcast.
Happy reading and listening.
