Congratulations Richard! Some of these distances are just mind-boggling :o . And I know they're hard earned. Will take inspiration from this for my row today!

Image Hooboy!

If you're not the lead horse on a sloppy track....mud bath! Here's Jane's Exaggerator at the Santa Anita Derby yesterday. Some will remember that last year's conditions at Preakness were sloppy, too....and American Pharoah loved it! Songbird also ran at Santa Anita...in a different race (1 and 1/16 miles or 8.5 furlongs), and is called the best three year old fillie this year...maybe the best three year old overall. She is not slated for the Kentucky Derby as her owner does not want to race her against the boys, and she's not fully grown yet. Still, to see Songbird as an undefeated...and winning without even being pushed...is very cool.

Horses New To The Paddock:

Ken G - Adventist
Doug G - Trojan Nation
Peter T - My Man Sam

Since Kentucky Derby entrants are made eligible by horses earning the most points for finishing in the top four in Derby prep races...that's 100 points for a first, 40 for a second place, 20 for a third, and 10 for a fourth....horses that are still set to run races like the Arkansas Derby could bounce some that might look like they're a Derby lock right now. There is a wide range of points for the 20 horses currently eligible: 151 for Gun Runner...all the way down to 32 (which seems like an odd number given that I am not sure how a horse wins less than 10 points). The lineup will change.

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

Thanks, everyone, for rowing and ski-erging with us....and developing a sudden interest in the ponies....

Rowing has been pretty sporadic this past 2 weeks - been sick with the cold/flu/plague/whatever it is. I'm missing it, and hoping I'm back within the next couple days - my back would welcome a good row!

Congrats to all on your recent milestones while I've been pretty much MIA! :)

The owners of Songbird Had a horse named Eight Belles, Which was a female that they Raced in Kentucky Derby against Big Brown. Eight Belles broke down at the finish Line :( . Would have Won Kentucky Oaks no problem. I was going to name my dog Luna, Belle in honor of her. But she became Luna at last moment with some help. So the owner has that in the back of his mind.. Songbird is best 3 year old this year in my opinion to bad for Norma. You can cheer her on in the Kentucky Oaks

Rock on when you can Heather. I don't row with a fever, makes me too weak but like to sweat it out any other time. Hope you are well very soon.

Does your old grey mare or black stallion require some loving? Is it time to oil that pony’s chain?
Go to Your Log, Season Summary, Near the bottom of the table is the title Overall. Make note of your hours under the Total Time column.

Every 50 Hours of Use Weekly for Institutional Users
Lubricate the chain with a teaspoon of purified mineral oil, 3-IN-ONE® oil, or 20W motor oil. Apply oil to a paper towel, and rub the paper towel along entire length of chain. Wipe off the excess. Repeat if needed. Do not clean the chain with any kind of cleaner or solvent, e.g. WD-40®.
I wipe down the chain first to remove any dirt. Then I apply the new oil. I also do this with two people one holding the handle all the way out. And the other doing the wiping. If you have more than one person riding then you need to combine both you hours. There are other things we should be doing such as checking all nuts to be certain they are tight, check the handle connection to the chain for wear and replace as needed. Take a flashlight to the fly wheel to see if it’s dusty in there. Read the Concept2.com site for all details.
A well-groomed erg is a happy erg.
