I skimmed through the discussions on marathons and half-marathons. I have only done one full erg marathon in my life, but I've done a bunch of halves. I liked the suggestion of doing some 10k and 15k pieces building up to it. You don't want to go from 30 minutes on the erg to two hours or whatever it will take you. It is okay if your are not the fastest erger. You don't have to go for a world record. Set a goal to simply finish the piece. You can always work on getting faster on later attempts. When I do the longer pieces, I will often adjust the damper so that my drag factor is lower (less strain on the back). I also recommend finding a good movie to watch. That definitely distracts me from the erg itself while tackling the 21,097m. Good luck to all who try.

Thank you coach Karyn. For the newbies, Karyn has a great deal of training and experience behind her and is willing to help. I know she's straightened me out on a few things.
Have fun and keep on rock'n

I did my first 1/2 marathon on the weekend. Didn't push myself too hard as I just wanted to focus on finishing the distance. Padding on the seat is great advice as mine was aching pretty good during the last 5,000m. And something I read in the forum that has been a HUGE help for long distances and daily rows is wrapping the handles with nylon (sounds crazy, but it works... buy a pair of nylons from the dollar store, cut the legs off, and wrap one around each side). Since doing that, and learning to hook my fingers over the handle instead of gripping it like a bat, I haven't had any problems with blisters at all. Good luck!

Whoop, whoop and way to go! Congratulations, Peter, on your FIRST EVER half moon....as the half marathon is affectionately known here in Luna-Tics land. We joke, somewhat, about FIRST EVERS....but I can guarantee that every one of us who has ever done a half marathon remembers the first one....and the total elation of finishing it! Well done!

PS - I cant wait to see what kind of graphic danwho comes up with for the nylons on the handles....I had never heard of this technique....
Thanks! I'm guessing then that here in Luna-Tics land a full marathon is known as a full moon?? If so, it won't be my first when I do one in May because I did a lot of mooning in my younger years, but I'll be celebrating just the same. :D

Oh, and here's a pic of the nylon handles... because you asked

Excellent graphic ... :)

I'm remembering that a full marathon is 42,195, entered on the monitor at the beginning of the session, and counting down without stopping (except for a sub-4-minute walk around the room or trip to the WC); that which offers you the chance to RANK on your log page. The full moon, is in recognition of your stellar effort of going the distance in one day, but in several stages which add up to or exceed the 42,195. (Same for the half marathon/half moon, with the corresponding 21,097.) It's all good!

Minnie is correct that a full moon is what we call distance equal to or greater than a full marathon, but not rowed as a single workout. I misspoke- I guess I was referring to the graphics we use of a half moon for a half marathon and a full moon for a full marathon. Or I just goofed. Snort. It is all good - and the graphic is hilarious, although I really want to see how the handle is wrapped.

Good to know. Thank you both.

I'll take a picture when I get home. Basically, I wrapped the handles like the tape seen on road bicycle bars, starting from the outside and wrapping in on each side, using duct tape to secure each end of nylon to the handle itself. First time using it my hands felt great, and that was the day after the row that gave me all the blisters that made me look into options (and proper grip) in the first place. The cushion and 'flex' in the nylon did make me feel like I was losing a little control/power at first, but I've either gotten used to it or the slight power loss was all in my head. Last thing... the nylon tends to shift and unravel once in a while, but I just loosely wrap it or fold it against the handle again before each row until I feel like getting the tape out and doing a perfect tight wrap again.
