When the Patriots play Indy, they will spot them 40 points just to make it fair.

Image The prelude to.....the Holiday Challenge!

Now that we're transitioning from "Ah...summer" to Fall, glorious Fall (and where did ALL THESE LEAVES COME FROM?!)....and the inevitable football team taunts....you know that "let it snow, let it snow" can't be all that far behind...and then, of course, it's the Holiday Challenge! Arthur Benjamin, who calls himself a mathemagician, has a new book out and in between other things, I'm reading it. It's called The Magic of Math: Solving for x and figuring out why. I know. Just screams GEEK doesn't it? Today, I was reading all about the magic of the number 9 - especially appropriate since Roger, Jay and Tammy both threw down a palindrome of repeater nines. Here's a 15 min TED talk by Art B....to give you an idea of why I find this entertaining. It also can get you in trouble...I was always able to work number things in my head pretty quickly. If you do this at staff meetings and get an answer so fast - sometimes people think it's intellectual arrogance. I want to make sure that you all know that it's not about showing off...it's about having fun with numbers (well, this time it is...hahaha). http://www.ted.com/talks/arthur_benjami ... anguage=en

Caution...it's contagious....
That sounds like a very interesting book. I'm going to see if our library has it!

The Great Courses offers four courses by Arthur Benjamin. One of them, Secrets of Mental Math, is now on sale. It looks as if that course would cover the subjects that have been talked about on this message board. I have the Joy of Mathematics and that one also covers those subjects and more. I always wait until the course I want goes on sale, and they do that often.

Just so no one has too much of a shock, you might see me show up in the team standings later today! I've finally made it back to the rower after a long absence and major surgery back in March. It's going to take a while to get back to where I was a year ago, this morning mad that clear - 2.6k left me utterly drained, but I'll get there :-)

Has there been a problem on the forums at some point? My old login name isn't recognised at all anymore, so I had to re-register...

Some of the things highlighted in the TED talk were definitely of the magic variety - fun and entertaining, but how important to know how to do them? There are a lot of topics that are more useful in life that he covers...but if the attention getting hook isn't there, maybe I wouldn't have checked it out! I struggled with math in school and imagine that Art B is one who keeps his students very entertained.

Well, rats. I uploaded the wrong file and don't have my usual computer so I cannot update the stats numbers. I can, however, share a couple of moose photos. Leaves are changing - some aspen gold showing on the mountainsides....seems appropriate for the Fall Challenge! We actually saw three moose - the young one below, and a mom moose and her calf who were busy crossing the highway (those photos were too blurry). No one wants to get too close to a mom moose and her calf.....

Love the moose photos and of course Bullwinkle. Growing up,my next door neighbors were a lot more well off than us. They owned a brewery during the twenties and thirties and somehow amassed huge sums of money. They were avid hunters and had several stuffed moose, bears, wolves, etc. in their magical basement (to me) .I used to go over daily to sit on bears and moose. My dad didn't hunt, but never denied my visiting them. I guess four purple hearts in WWII was plenty of shooting for him. I still love moose but only the live variety.

About the Fall Team Challenge...

Post by Kona2 » September 13th, 2015, 8:46 am

Sometimes these Challenges kind of blend together in my mind. Has there always been a 100K and 200K challenge level designated for the Fall Team Challenge?
