You're right that the rankings are performance based and not distance based. I was thinking more along the line of rewarding consistency and improvement. So rewarding consistent rowing over the year might be a way to get people motivated to keep at it.
Also, how about a reward based on improved times and distances. so if you beat your own PB or SB or last years total distance, then you get recognized.
Tracking improvements would be fairly simple and they could do it simply with certificates like now and possibly add some sort of online badge system if they ever update the site to be more interactive. Of course right now I'd just like it if it didn't offer to rank my 2K recovery rows
