Hey Gary, do you use gloves at all? I have those New Grip gloves and I even add a layer of terrycloth between them and my hands (pieces of old washcloth). It gives a lot more cushion and a wider object to grip. It might help your hands. And as far as the thumbs, they shouldn't be doing too much at all. I think you should be able to row with just four fingers hooked over the bar. Maybe. :)

Tendinitis is a bitch though -- I feel for ya!

Hey, Team! I just reported my measly 7903 meters for today, and we've surged ahead to 16th place by a margin of 678 meters!! Woot!

See, every contribution counts!! :D :D :D

I use a hook grip with very light hand pressure. My thumb barely touches the bar.

Yah, Lisa, that's a good row! Ha Ron, I did not know you were breathing down my neck! I've got my Excel sheet/chart and my little book, and I'm soooo intent on getting my pledged VTC 300K (and my goal of 3MM for the year) that am only vaguely aware where I stand in relation to others. I don't even dream about competing with Diana and David. But now that I know we're competing........ ;-)

Gary, I gave up wearing gloves--it seemed to encourage a firmer grip. I've got some arthritis in my hands, so I very loosely grip with my ring finger, middle finger, and (to a lesser extent) index finger. I deliberately do not curl my little fingers or thumbs. Thumbs rest lightly on TOP of the bar. My little fingers often stick out, like I'm having tea with Queen Elizabeth. It looks a little goofy, but it alleviates my hand issues. And it forces me to pull with my back and shoulders, not my hands and forearms. That being said, I have very interesting calluses on those two fingers--hard pointy things on my first knuckle.

9 more rowing days in January!

That'll teach me to open my big mouth; not sure I can hit 300k, but I'll give it a shot effort. As it is, my 275k goal is the longest monthly total that I've been able to row in several years.

So is that 3MM goal for 2015 (Jan to Dec) or the 2014/2015 rowing year (May to April)?

Just moved to 16th place by the skin of our noses over the New Haven Rowing Club. We're also pretty close to the Arlington-Belmont Crew. Row strong everyone, every meter will count when it's all over.

So Bobbie's comment about not seeing the team standings made me realize that others on the team may not often come to the site. So, here are the top 15 on the team thus far.

It's really very close - with the exception of the top 3 or 4 anyway.

Don't know if they're interesting, but:
  • Damper setting not maxed out
  • Danger setting maxed out (baggy shorts)
  • Actual decent style! Layback before arms (wonder what happens next though)
  • Interesting that block is behind the erg. Wonder if there's one in front? (typically these guys have massive check, which moves the erg forward)

Most importantly: proper use of safety glasses to protect from shrapnel as flywheel explodes from going supersonic!

Ron, do you think you could row 50 m and pull ahead of me? :P Let me forewarn you--I'm off to the gym (here at work) in an hour, will do another 10K or so.

I made it a personal goal to do 3MM for the rowing year (5/1 - 4/30). So, on the average of 250K/month. I've got an Excel spreadsheet and graph, with both the targeted and actual posted (and graphed) So I can see if I'm on track. But I'll be headed to the islands later this winter, and will be away from The Beast (my pet erg) for several weeks, so rowing my fingers off now. To make up for the future lolling on the beach with a Bushwhacker or Painkiller in my hand, watching the clouds go by.

I finished off 14k this morning, so if you're off to row 10k, then I'll have give you the lead today and come back to the fight another day :)

Good luck on that 3MM goal, that's a lot of meters. And enjoy the islands.

Indeed. So for others who may not know about this, the artist is named Banksy, a now famous, used-to-be-anonymous, graffiti artist. He painted this grim reaper on the side of a ship, the Thekla, in Bristol harbor. I understand that the image will be cut out of the ship's hull and moved to a museum - or perhaps that already happened.

Where did you see this, Glen?

Banksy has so much good stuff out there. Here's a link to some of it:

I saw it on the ship of course. I was over in Bristol on business, took a walk along the river, happened to look across at the ship and said (in my best imitation of my 17 year old son) "wait...what?"
