HA! You asked for it. Now you have to see more of herdamselfly wrote:I bet she's a good watchdog -- "Set foot in this house, and I'll stick my tiara in your eye!! I dare ya!"![]()

She's a little over a year and a half now. The first time that I saw her guarding instincts kick in was a few months ago when we were outside playing. A stranger came walking through our woods towards the house; she stared at him and gave a very low guttural growl. He smiled, waved, turned around and left rather quickly.

Since then I've seen her react to unexpected visitors at the door; she goes from sound sleep on the sofa to a growling, barking guard dog at the door in seconds. My guess is that someone trying to come in uninvited will more than likely regret it.
She's generally a sweet, loving creature, but she has an inate need to protect that is quite amazing to see.

Okay, so this brings up a thought. I know this isn't rowing related, but how many in our team have pets? If so, then what kind? Willing to share photos of them? You've seen more than enough of mine, I'm sure.CONLEJM wrote:I wish I could train my cat to bite my mother-in-law!
Pictures or no, though, I'd love to know what sorts of creatures the rest of us have.
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I have a Collie and a Basset Hound.
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
We were thinking about a Basset Hound, but they look so sad, I wasn't sure that we could handle the daily dose of depressiongarygOP wrote:I have a Collie and a Basset Hound.

Though to be sure, they at least look like they'd be quiet and relaxed; we may have been better off than with our bounce-off-the-wall-18-hours-a-day-with-no-letting-us-rest pile of energy. I would guess that your collie keeps you busy, though. Herding dogs are generally quite energetic, no?
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I have had 3 Bassets-over the years- they are awesome family pets-very heavy boned so when they sit in your lap you feel it- but they are quite athletic if you keep them trim. They love food and will eat anything. The best way to kill a Basset Hound is to throw a large ham on the floor- and it will eat itself to death.
The Collie is smart enough to scare me- an intuitive and logical thinker no less- she is a leader, herds and expects me to follow. The only time she has ever been in a fight with another dog was to protect the Basset. She loves her walks.
The Basset is Rhubarb- she was a rescue- from the Bartlesville SPCA- she is about 11.5 years old by now.
Muriel was raised by us- she is 12.5 and has slowed down quite a bit.

I'm trying to post pictures of my "kids", cold and slimy though the are, but Flickr and Windows Photo Gallery is making me crazy. What photo sites do you guys use and like?

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I don't like any of them, but I use Photobucket because it allows for posting my hand-crafted animated gif's. The other sites don't allow for those.damselfly wrote:I'm trying to post pictures of my "kids", cold and slimy though the are, but Flickr and Windows Photo Gallery is making me crazy. I truly hate Photobucket for all their obnoxious ads, pop-up and otherwise. The problem is that I haven't found any other free service that allows for gif's
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
When my first human child was born I stole a Bill Cosby joke; I told the doctor she delivered a lizard, that I wanted my money back, and that I would sue for malpractice.damselfly wrote:I'm trying to post pictures of my "kids", cold and slimy though the are, but Flickr and Windows Photo Gallery is making me crazy. Back then the lizard/child joke was politically incorrect. These days using a Bill Cosby joke is politically incorrect. Times change.
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Oh, your's are getting on in years, so they must be calm and quiet by now. Could you post pictures? I'd love to see them. But wait, an athletic Basset? Really? I'm trying to picture that.garygOP wrote:I have had 3 Bassets-over the years- they are awesome family pets-very heavy boned so when they sit in your lap you feel it- but they are quite athletic if you keep them trim. When I lived in England, I saw a herding competition. The dog was given whistle commands with the intent of herding sheep into a designated area. It was spectacular to watch the dog do it's job. Talk about logical and intuitive thinking. I understand exactly what you mean.
I'm waiting for my dog to get old enough for her brain to clear up and allow for some lucidity. Before we got her I was told that after a year she would mature and calm down. At 9 months I was told that it may take up to 2 years. 16 months into it I'm now told "Welllll, you know, it may take 3-4 years".

Work dogs are a brindle coat Dutch Shepherd and Malinois. Family dogs, a lab mix and a Boston terrier.
