You know how when you work out and are sore, but get up and do it all over again and just keep moving to keep the soreness at bay? well, the soreness slammed me today LOL. I woke up and went to get out of bed I am was like OH, ya... I forgot about that after-effect LOL

So, I am gonna let my old bones and muscle rest for at least a week, I think they need and deserve it.

And ya Damsel, that has to be left over as I have not posted any rows in my logbook since the early PST time of the 16th, regarding my 15th's rowings
An amazing feat, Diane. I'm awestruck at what you achieved. Enjoy your rest!

I'm utterly amazed! 3M meters at 2:30/500m pace: that's over 8 hours of rowing per day, every day, for a full month. And the final logged amount of 275,000 meters on the final day is almost 23 hours of rowing at 2:30 pace. Just wow!

OK, start with this picture and then click the "next" button a couple of times. That will give you an idea of what can happen (and no it's not my team, but I was standing on the bridge watching it happen):

http://www.row2k.com/hocr/photo.cfm?act ... EV1Jvl4rFk

And if you must have video, well we can oblige that as well: http://www.hocr.org/the-regatta/live-webcast/
  • in the "Race" field Select 22 (Men's Master Eights 40+)
  • in the "Entry" field select 22: Station L Rowing Club
Not very exciting which is good. Reasonable but not excellent rowing because we were making a hard (very) left turn and us starboard dudes were attempting to apply more power than the ports.

Highlights of the race:
  • Didn't get killed by the Cambridge team. This wasn't for lack of trying. While we were in the warm up area they decided to do a full power piece. Unfortunately they were aimed directly at us, completely in our cox's blind spot and their cox's blind spot as well. We were sitting still. They, umm, weren't. Insert lots of yelling and screaming to get their attention, add huge saucer-like eyes from their bow man when he heard us and turned to look, sprinkle liberally with big plumes of spray as they all threw it into reverse...good fun. No paint scraped, but it was rather close and we almost ended our race before it ever started.
  • Rowing under the Riverside bridge. The bridges are very low arches but fairly deep (width of the roadbed). Essentially they are concrete megaphones. We were overlapped and passing a boat and when we got under the bridge our cox yelled in the loudest (amplified) voice possible "aaaaaTAAAAAACK!". Our boat squirted out of there like a watermelon seed while apparently all of the heads on the other boat snapped over our direction. Our 5'4" cox managed to scare the bajeezus out of 9 people while simultaneously motivating 8 others.
  • Our cox totally nailed the entire course. That's no small feat, it's probably one of the most challenging courses out there.
  • Walking around the massive crowds and suddenly realizing that at 6'5" I was medium sized.
In the end we got 16th out of 23, and apparently 15th after some penalties were assessed. That might not sound great, but the first six boats were being rowed by former Olympic and/or National Team athletes and it was just a gas and a half to even be on the same water with those people. From a personal perspective, this was my third head race ever, and I first set foot in a boat a year and 4 months ago, so I'm blown away that I got the chance to be a part of this thing. Cool beyond words.

I highly recommend supplementing erging with some rowing...who knows, maybe we could field a TimbukTOO 8+ in the race one day!

Sigh...two more races this season then it's back onto the torture device that all of the rest of you have been playing with all year.

Outstanding, Glen!!! You guys actually look like you know what you're doing.

I'd hate, hate, hate to be a cox!

Do you guys take your own boat and oars or do you have to get them from Budget or Avis when you get there? If you have to take your own, how the heck do you get it there?!?!

Strange as it may seem, you can actually rent boats from other clubs. We had a very nice 2010 Hudson heavyweight 8+ provided by a club in Hartford, CT. Those guys get the "coolest people ever" award for letting us totally re-rig their boat and oars to match what we wanted.

Sigh. Three more weeks of regattas then it's back to <ugh> erg time!

Last time I checked, the probability I'd run you guys into a bridge abutment or crash you into the Luna-tics was pretty damn low! :D

Keir's old team, Haaaaaah-vaaaaaaaahd, getting crashed into by some goof-balls from some lame school or other... Keir obviously wasn't rowing that day or Harvard would have been farther ahead.

I think ramming into the other boats is a perfectly good strategy, and takes Crew to a whole new level! Imagine the spikes, barbed wire, clubs, battering rams, etc. that could be affixed to your boat to better disable your opponents!

I don't want our boat damaged... I think we should invest in cannon!

Well, all you OTW rowers who will miss the moisture post-season, you could always do this:

Congrats! We sent a few boats including the 3rd place finisher in the masters womens 2X.
One more race for me - actually looking forward to the offseason.

50,000,058 million lifetime meters today. Can't believe this. I started 11/30/04. Have had some good rowing years and some poor ones. This has been a tough season for me , but hanging in there.
