Boy, I have to thank Kyle for being the only guy decent enough to try not to make the Captain look too pathetic!damselfly wrote:Challenge Goals - Day 28 of 31 (90.3%):
Yisroel H - 133,284 of 250,000 (53.3%)
Kyle J - 27,000 of 200,000 (13.5%)
Between tendonitis in my forearm, bursitis in my shoulder, and 4 weekends of Jewish holidays (3 for which I needed to travel) that lost me 11 days, I'll be thrilled if I can top 160K, let alone the 250K to which I aspired! I don't like "leading from behind", but there were so many studs & studettes putting up eye-popping numbers, I doubt I'll even be able to reach the average meters rowed by members of our team!
I will still work to finish strong (though the final Jewish Holiday of the season begins at 6:45PM on the 15th!), and I see that many others will at least match my last-minute quasi-heroics, if not dwarf them!
No, I won't row slower than 1:58 or so, even though I could likely rack up some extra meters that way. I don't know whether it's pride, pigheadedness or wisdom, but I still won't row anything that won't improve my fitness by stressing my system...
So, here goes nothing! Congratulations on an amazing team run, and I hope I had some part in that!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Dude, it's unwise to fry your neurological system more than twice a week - and that's for an athlete, even an elite one. Between Tabatas & intervals & kettlebells and who-knows-what-else, you're pushing your system to the brink more than twice a week! Even if you choose to work out 6 days a week, it has to be hard/easy/hard/easy/easy/hard/rest.johnb wrote:I did a variation on a WOD and it really kicked my tail. I thought it would be an easy one. Pyramid rate changes. So in two minute segments I rowed 22-24-26-28-30-28-26-24-22-24-26-28-30, before just freestyling for another 15 minutes. I ended up rowing for 45 minutes and doing just over 10K. I come home, had dinner and noticed that when I extended my arms my forearms are in knots. The only thing I can attribute it to is the affect of the SPM rate change. Put on some compression sleeves and took 3 advil. I hope I feel some relief in the morning. They only hurt when I straighten them out. This seems strange after rowing over 2 million meters in the past year, but it was a new pattern.
("Easy" can be shorter or slower rows.) I'd only go to the limit once a week (Tabata OR many intervals OR an extra long row OR a kettlebell challenge), and have that be the day before your rest day. Then sleep an extra couple hours...
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I know I push the limit, I do work in my rest cycles. That said, I appreciate the voice of reason. I am approaching a real break cycle, so I have been driving hard to finish off the FTC. I guess I'll go much more lightly for the next week or so. thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate that the Boys of Brooklyn, my hometown, are represented so ably, and that you're really taking responsibility for your health after decades of a sedentary lifestyle - and loving it!johnb wrote:I know I push the limit, I do work in my rest cycles. I'm also a fan of kettlebells (esp. kettlebell swings, a great prep for rowing), intervals as a great complement to distance rowing, etc. You're doing all the right things - I would like them to just have the beneficial effects, without them dragging nasty stuff like overtraining in their wake...

First ever HM!
Have a few blisters on my hands but otherwise feel ok. I'll do a 5k tonight and then finish the challenge with a 10k tomorrow.
Cheers!

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Gary D- Congrats on the HM. It hurts. It hurt me enough that I doubt I will ever try a full marathon.
I'd also like to comment on a recurring theme I have seen in a few recent posts- that being the desirability of stressing the system in order to improve fitness.
Rest is just as important a part of your routine as is pushing yourself to the limit.
I don't see anything wrong with taking a seat in the boat and grinding out 10 or 15 or 20K at a pace that is analogous to a jog in the park-
for me- it still elevates my pulse and works up a good sweat- and it helps counteract the effects of that extra tablespoon of peanut butter with honey I inadvertently scarfed while mindlessly standing at the *** DELETE - SPAM *** cupboard
It could be because I am older, but going at a pace that is not on the edge of red-lining, is not going to be deleterious to your fitness level or strength level.
I don't shoot for a maximum lift every time I hit the weights- even with a progressive exercise, building a base is constructive.
The key is doing it- and doing it again- and being on this team helps keep me coming back-
continuing to come back and row is the vital thing.
Dr Suzuki said that repetition is the mother of learning.
As they say on the street:
True that!

What? I'm still around? Oh...yeah...guess I am.
OK, not much (any) erging lately. That will all change in about 3 weeks. Just popping my electronic head in to mention that I'm going to compete in a little boat race this weekend. It's in Boston, some of you might have heard of it. If anybody else is going to be in town, watch for the Station L men's 8+ [40+], bow #22 (at least I think that's the number, it's where we're starting). I'll be in three seat (yes, I know what it's called...).

Good luck, Glen! And we need a race report, preferably with video. Especially if embarrassing or disastrous things happen.glenmbaker wrote:What? I'm still around? Oh...yeah...guess I am.
