Wowzer, Jane! The Aurora looks quite galactic - and what a glow! Thank you very much - it was a large enough drink to serve many on the crew I believe! Thanks!

Happy New Year to my Luna-tic Family!!!

It is that time of year when my real life rowing team makes me feel guilty. Two years ago they started a team for the Jan. Virtual Challenge. Every year they encourage me to sign up with the New Haven Rowing Club for this challenge. Every year I decline. I've been erging under the influence of the Luna-tics since 2008 or so. I find you all to be highly motivational and inspirational, so once again I declined joining my real-life crew team.

Here's to many meters in 2013!

Karyn

Hot Toddy seems to be working. I think I'll have a dash of Aurora Borealis... That looks like one of those magic bottles that never empties.

I'm trying to find a team to row with for the Virtual Team Challenge, and hopefully the rest of the year too. I have been lurking on the luna-tics board for a few weeks, and would like to join your team.

I had never rowed until last June when my husband suggested we get a rower. As soon as I got on, I loved it! I participated in the Dog Days of Summer Challenge, Rowlymipics, and just finished the Holiday Challenge with a little over 250,000 meters. The challenges have been so helpful in keeping me motivated, and I'd like to keep up the momentum I have coming off the Holiday Challenge.

Happy New Year!
Sarah

You guys seem to be just my kind of nuts. I'm new to rowing, and I love the idea of the team challenges. I'm trying to get into a shape that doesn't look like a big pear, and friendly competition is highly motivating!

I hope there is room for one more!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 1.1.13

Post by Kona2 » January 2nd, 2013, 1:55 pm

Whooosh! That's the sound of another year flying by....and of a team of ergs zooming along!

Image Day 2 or 3 of 31...EVERY meter counts !!

The Virtual Team Challenge team standings page isn't available just yet - suspect that like many companies (and regular people), Concept2 is working on switching many items to the 2013 version. So far, our team roster has 70 people and we've rowed about 750,000 m since the Challenge started. Way to row! For individuals looking for a team to row with, the Luna-Tics team is an open team. To sign on for the Challenge segment, you just have to select Luna-Tics team by scrolling over to the Team section of your logbook. Scroll down to the join a team section, and we'll be there! Always room for more rowers - at least until January 15th, and then the rosters for ALL teams are set.

Welcome back to Rivka, and to Dan T. Always good to see your names on the roster!

Some historical perspective...

Concept2 sponsors three team challenges during a rowing year: the Fall Team Challenge (September 15 - October 15), the Virtual Team Challenge (January 1 - 31), and the World Erg Challenge (March 15 - April 15). My take on these three challenges is that they are only cleverly disguised as separate and distinct. No, this virtual rowing universe has designs that mirror our on the water world of rowing, and these team challenges are more like a race series. Competition between teams is often fierce, and teams just barely edged out of a spot by another team often vow to take back that team position in the next team challenge. I suspect that some of our current on the water rowers (and thank you Karyn for once again rowing with us!), and former on the water rowers can elaborate better on the competitions that develop between teams during a rowing season.

Something really cool happens to this team (historically) when the first team challenge occurs....there is a huge spike in the amount of team weekly meters rowed - and it's not that we gain a multitude of new team members then. The impact is felt throughout the rest of the rowing season, too because there is a step shift in our baseline meters rowed. I continue to use the chart below to give teammates an idea of what that looks like (a graph opportunity...!), partially because I have yet to create another one that is more recent, but also because I'm pretty sure the pattern continues year to year (so far).

Image

And, here's a chart that could be scary...but there really are teams that can produce 60 MM in a single Challenge. We have produced up to 23 or 24 MM a few times. Every Challenge is different, and every rowing season is different.

Image

Never fear. These charts and numbers are just history. They are not expectations. Many teammates often wonder how the team challenge is different - and what are the unwritten "rules" or expectations. For me, I still believe in row what you can, when you can...and think of your teammates doing the same thing. Some teammates say they add ten or fifteen minutes more or rowing when they row - or add in another short rowing session. Some teammates row some beastie meters. The majority of the team rows anywhere from 5,000 to 150,000 meters in a team Challenge. I'll always ask for more. :D

CURRENT day...

Season meters as of 245/365 = 111,661,555 m

Total meters on the day = 2,646,990 m

Oars in space (participation) = 33 percent
