I must admit I was a little suspicious about "healthy whole grains" being potentially bad but there is some research that suggests that they are. Whole grain or not, oftentimes blood sugar is spiked by them, sometimes more than pure sugar. Some people are more susceptible to the effects than others. It seems that I'm fairly immune to it but my wife is very sensitive to them.

I agree with you that packaged food and added sugar are bad. We eat zero food out of a box now. Our diet consists of lots of fresh veggies and greens, full-fat dairy and eggs, nuts like almonds and walnuts, some fruit, and lots of tasty meat. We eat almost zero wheat but do eat some rice as well as sweet potatoes and a little corn now and then.

Your blood-work suggests you're doing very well so keep doing what you're doing. I'd still suggest you watch Fathead. it's on Netflix streaming and many cable systems as on-demand. If anything it's an entertaining movie but I think it might also give you some perspective on the whole "low fat and whole grains are best" attitude that seems to be everywhere these days. There is also a blog by the same name that is maintained by the movie's creator. It's a good read.

All hands on board, looking for disaster relief in America, the world, or… Vermont?! A fantabulous 18 of 48 members (38%) logged 209,973 total meters Wednesday! We rose to #11 in team meters since the Holiday Challenge began (with all the Top Ten having more members than us)!

Milestones: (None yesterday left 5 for today!) David W didn’t welch on his promise to reach 3.5M, Gary G’s yanky strokes added up to 1.2M, Chris H incredibly hulked to 900K, James C a climber to 200K, Mark S reached the mark of 150K!
Approaching milestones: Heather storming towards 1.8M (-29,000m), Mark E (-2,655m) even closerer to 1.7M, Jamie now approaching 800K (-23,910m), Fred (-7,889m) & Kevin (-18,884m) close to 600K, Marius (-500m) now closer to 400K than Bob G (-1,622m), Kathy (-5,776m) or Glenn (-11,696m), Paul E (-1,167m) approaches 150K, Yolanda nearer 100K (-2,910m), Deb now approaching 50K (-7,198m), while Alison reaches the cusp of 25K (-1,489m)!

Goal wise I'm for whatever you guys pick . 2 benefits to exercise here-good for us, and help people. The flood relief thing here is still going on. Not far from here is a couple (actually several) towns destroyed- Prattsville for one-small town, and Windham-basically a ski town, Margaretville etc. You can google them. After the hurricane I was out of power for 11 days (means no work), so I went and helped with the relief effort. Shoveled 4" of mud out of a house etc. Difficult to watch people deal with that type of disaster. Lose everything (cars, houses, belongings) and have nothing to replace it with. The main employer in Prattsville had their facility pretty much destroyed. So, to make a long story short row, row, row your boat.

For forcasting purposes- I am in Cincinnati today, and out of the water.
I return home tonight and should get in 3 good rowing days - somewhere between 40 and 50K- prior to an upcoming trip out west.
I will be off the boat from 12-13---12-18, in LA and SF.
When I return, I hope to get back in the boat, if there is still an open oar for me.

The Low G.I. Handbook has some good info on how to choose healthy carbs and actually names specific foods and their glycemic index. The glycemic index has been around since 1982 (I believe) and has undergone several studies. It explains why our bodies need carbs and how to choose the best carbs. I found it an interesting read and hope to implement some of it in my eating plan. Turns out that it has cleared up a lot of what I was already doing. It helped explain the digestion process and the "hows and whys" of sugar being released into the bloodstream.

Ahoy, shipmates!! A balmy Saturday here in SoCal, hope you've had a good day where ever you may be today.... Again a good 14 of 48 members (29%) logged 171,152 total meters today. Huzzah!!

Milestones achieved: Heather R rammed through 1.8M, Kevin K konquered 600K, and Glenn Y yawed through 400K (or yodeled, or yelled -- dunno -- I wasn't there. :P )

On the horizon: Matthew is coming up on 1.3M (-43,202m), Adam is nearing 1.1M (-39,063m), Jamie is pretty close to 800K (-2,911m), Andy is nearing 700K (-15,793m), Lisa is a short row from 500K (-8,115m), and Mark is marking time to 200K (-24,273m). Row on, team!

This week's frequent rowers (Sat 12/3 through Fri 12/9):
Kevin K - 7
Andy I, Gary G, James C & Mark E - 6
Adam M, Bob G, David W, Heather R, Jamie B, Marius S & Mark S - 5
Alison H, Chris H, Deb J & Lisa H - 4

Not sure, but that might be a record number of FRs!! B)

Posted Meters:
Gary G - 20,327 Good meters!
Heather R - 20,000 The talented tamer of twenties...
Glenn Y - 18,103 Excellent!
Mark E - 16,605 Done "resting"!
Lisa H - 15,344 A few extra minutes to kill -- on to "The Return of the King"!
Adam M - 12,000 Recovered nicely...
Chris H - 12,000 The twelve rows of Christmas...
Mark S - 11,037 Great numbers! (Apparently Pam feels guilty, but NOT GUILTY ENOUGH! )
Jamie B - 10,999 Our man in Manhattan musters some meters...
Matthew R - 10,575 Not bad second day back...
Andy I - 10,000 Killer!
Kevin K - 7,162 His daily dose of digging deep...
Bob G - 5,000 Fives feel fine!
James C - 2,000 An easy day, well-deserved!

Total Team Holiday Challenge Earnings so far: $55.16 (David W : $10.16, Heather R : $9.00, Gary G : $5.88, Jamie B : $4.24, Glenn Y : $3.80, Adam M : $3.44, Yisroel H : $3.04, Chris H : $3.04, Bob G : $2.80, Andy I : $2.80, Mark E : $2.64, Lisa H : $2.28, John S : $2.04). Now that I'm finally in the money, I can compare my calcs with C2, and I find that they're rounding up to the nearest k (so it seems), so your money numbers may vary slightly from mine. (Rounding up. Ha! I make you WORK FOR IT!! ). Next on deck to bleed C2 dry are Kevin, James, Jeff, Mark, Matthew, and Marius. Row guys, row!! :D

Pam still feels guilty but is a coughing machine right now. Her cold has started to drain so it might be a few days before she can get going. She should still have time to get in shape before the team challenge starts.

All hands on board, with Glen B grabbing an oar! A huge TimbukTOO welcome to Glen, who we hope will have a lot of “pull” around here!
