Thanks, Baz. Yes cross-fit is expensive if you go to their gymns. But...on their website they have a whole section devoted to setting up in your own garage very inexpensively. That's what I do - with my son as coach. I know how to mooch when I have to! And I totally agree about having the regular heart check-ups. Those are essential.BAZzy wrote:Thanks for sharing that Ross, and I know you are a big fan of Cross-Fit (your Airforce son does it from memory??), and I must say I like the concept of it, but found it quite expensive. But I agree with your general sentiment; however my caveat would be to have regular heart check-ups just to make sure all is as it should be. I’m scheduled again shortly given my ‘statistic’ advances by one tonight!rsdavr wrote:I haven't been reading the forum for a few weeks - too many other things crowding my life this time of year. But I took a few minutes to review it today - what a great read! Our team is awesome in encouraging one another and at the same time sharing valuable information.
I want to weigh in on the heartbeat discussion. I'm naturally interested since huge portions of my life have been affected by abnormal heart issues. My cardiologist is also one who says "If you feel good - do it". Don't worry about the number. But I've found that "feeling good" is interpreted differently by different people. I don't feel good emotionally or phsychologically unless I've pushed my exertion to the point of physical strain. Physical strain at the time doesn't feel particularly good - it's hard. Doing 10 1,000m intervals at max effort does NOT feel good to me especially after #7. But when it's over I'm like a million bucks! You guys that do 100k in a day REALLY know what I'm talking about. If my goal during exercise is to feel good I'd leave the heart rate at 140bpm and call it a day. But that would not accomplish my ultimate fitness goals. I understand from crossfit that in order to train properly you must push your endurance and strength to its limit and little beyond and your body will respond by growing stronger for the next time. Believe it or not -this can actually be FUN! So I think we need to be careful how we interpret "feeling good". I'm not talking about chest pain and abnormal shortness of breath. I do know what those things are and they are NOT fun!
The LUNATICS exemplify committment to fitness. I'm really happy to be a member of this team.
Ross
On another note, no rowing today, in fact I’m heading for the couch after posting this, not long back from a 27 kilometre bush run in the hills, and whilst a little slower than I would have liked I’m generally happy. I went along the Great North Walk (on our doorstep) and this section doesn’t really lend itself to running as such, it is kind of like one big work-out on a step machine! Just worked out I did around 1,700 metres of ascent, and the same descent, all up it took around 5 hours... The Speight’s will be similar, but should be able to run more in that so hopefully will be a better time...
Good weekend to all, and thanks to Ron for posting the stats!!
Cheers, BBB

Woohoo! Look at the Lunies row!
Wowzer, mates! Some mighty good rowing going on - I see several new reindeer AND it looks like the team donation $$$ are really climbing! If my calculations are correct....$289.97 for the team! Almost NINE million Holiday Challenge team meters from the Luna-Tics !!! That's 97 percent of goal....am sure that the team will bust through that milestone later today!
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
And a belated Statistic++ day from me too BAZzy.
Got to row this morning, and Tommy B on RowPro put up a 10k row, so I joined and rowed with him again. He was nice enough to slow his pace to match mine (even when I took a short water/towel break he slowed his pace by 10+ seconds until I had caught up to him again). I like the extra motivation from online rowing simply because I had rowed with Tommy a couple of times before and was well aware that his pace is significantly faster than mine. I didn't want him to have to wait too long for me so I put in extra effort.
Net result: A PB on 10k at 39:47.9. I was originally going to attempt a HM, but 10k was the saner choice I think.
And welcome back K2 .
As far as the challenge goes: As of December 11, we're 18 days into the challenge and have 12 days to go (if you're done rowing for today anyway). If you have 200k as your challenge target (at least, that's what I have set for myself), then today's target of challenge meters should be 120km. I'm still lagging behind (curse that 2 day late start) at 118.3km, but it's not insurmountable. 80km (or 81.7km in my case) to go to hit the target.

Ah, this took a while to percolate. I thought your "advancing statistic day" meant that you'd moved from number something to number something else on the Honor Board. Not! Best Belated Birthday, Baz!bg wrote:and happy birthday from me too.....DUCKMARX wrote:Happy Advancing Statistic Day BAZzyBAZzy wrote:. . .my ‘statistic’ advances by one tonight!

Just catching up on the past few pages here, and boy is there a lot going on. Great rowing effort in the challenge, Team! Keep it up! Congrats to Chris on your 3 million meter season! Wowzer! Thanks to Karyn for taking the time to ask your doctor friend regarding heart rates. That was a great posting! Happy belated b-day to Wim and Baz-monster. Hope you celebrated in Luna-tic fashion! Thanks to Ron for taking over the stats - no small feat during a challenge! Have a safe trip home, K2! Gotta run!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
I just want to tell all of you Luna-tics that being a part of this team has been a high point in my year. It's been a tough one, and I have to be honest, I'll be happy to see 2011 in my rear view window! Just a quick summing up (not for sympathy, just perspective).
My father passed away earlier this year, we weren't close, but it hit me harder than I thought it would.
I had tendonitus in both knees and had to pull out of a 1/2 marathon that I'd been training for (but found a new love for my rowing machine, so that's a blessing as well. )
Had to get a crown, then a root canal on the same tooth!
Found out I am hypo-thyroid after having to deal with a very painfully swollen thyroid (ah, so that's why the sudden weight gain and nice muffin top I've recently developed ) Even with health insurance between those two health related issues as well as the unplanned funeral trip the savings account was taking a big hit. Ugh! Enough already!
I turned 50 and have to deal with the issues that come with this oh so wonderful stage of life.
And 2e had planned to go to Israel & Egypt for our 30th anniversary and have been putting aside money for years, but then the uprising happened in Egypt and that was a no-go.
On some good notes though, (trying to be positive here) We re-established a fractured relationship with our daughter, celebrated 30 years of marriage (went to Montreal, Canada instead of Egypt and had the best time EVER at the Jazz Festival).
And have a new grandson born in July.
And while recovering from knee injuries I started using my rowing machine again, saw a Fall Challenge invitation, looked for a team to join and the rest is history! So Luna-tics YOU are the high point of my year and I want to thank you for it.
Sorry for rambling. I started off wanting to thank you and ended up writing an epistle.
I head off on Tuesday to pick up our 3 year old granddaughter for a visit before our son and daugther-in-law bring the baby down a week later to be here for Christmas, so I don't know how much time I'll have to get some rowing in or check out the forum. Toddlers are so time consuming!

I know what you mean Ron, these two are our son's and he's the younger of our two children. The oldest will be 30 in February and is just starting to talk about starting a family in the next year or so. Boy things are sure different than when I was their age. By 30 I had a 10 year old and an 8 year old!I sure am jealous that you have such cute grandchildren. I'm hoping that rowing will help me live long enough to see grandchildren Our son is 31 and the prospects right now look dim
Ron
As for the new baby brother, she generally does well with him. But isn't enjoying the aspect of having to "share" her old baby things with him. She keeps hiding things that she doesn't want him to have. She's been quite spoiled as an only child and wants constant attention. We'll be working on manners, no whining, and temper tantrums while she's here for her visit. She isn't a brat, but can be bratty at times. We're hoping to influence her to make better choices even at her young age. Wish me luck, and lots of patience.just27 wrote: Aww - so cute, Jodi! How does your granddaughter feel about her new sib?
Okay, gotta go get a row in. It's raining and cold outside. I've got to run through the rain to my gym out in the workshop and I feel so unmotivated today, which is all the more reason to just go do it. I was supposed to start training today for a 15k (The Gate River Run down in Jacksonville Florida held every March). Just a couple of miles to see if the knees are going to co-operate but maybe I'll try for later this afternoon if the weather cooperates. But then again, probably not, so I really do need to find some motivation. I know I have some around here somewhere...
