Long lost loonie lurks  ...

Sorry to have been away for so long. :( Wonderful to see all the new team members :D and wow what amazing meters! AJ's graphics are absolutely amazing! I'm glad to be able to be getting back to rowing. After the muscle strains, I eased back slowly and was getting back into it in Oct/Nov, when I came down with a cold. Got over that, then started feeling odd when i laid down or got up - the room would spin...diagnosed with BPPB :( - a benign type of vertigo - that meant no erging, doc's orders  . Finally over that by mid-January. I'm easing back @ 15 min per day, but tonite I did another 7.5, just because it's the last day of the challenge. Sure wish I could have done more, but I'm coming back and don't want any more injuries!

Congratulations to all on an amazing January Challenge. Next year I want my canoe!!

Congratulations, Dave H, on achieving the 100,000 m milestone in the Virtual Team Challenge and climbing into your canoe! Woot! Woot!
Thanks Jan... as usual your encouragement made the difference (didn't mean to leave a HM+ for the last day's erging)!
And a massive "G'donya" to AJ for your amazing "graphiques"! You have done amazing things personalising them for each and every team member - don't know how you make the time with all the erging you guys do!
Huge congrats to an amazing team for making a mammoth effort - hope we get to keep a few of those high-flyers now they have sampled our hospitality!

Cheers from down-under on a 42 degree day...

Virtual Reality: Calculating....calculating

Post by Kona2 » February 1st, 2011, 10:34 am

Some of us remember the antics of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the cartoon squirrel and moose, who lived in the fictional small town of Frostbite Falls....with temperatures here not expected to reach zero for the next 36 hrs (currently - 12 F)....can relate to Frostbite Falls!

Meanwhile, the Virtual Team Challenge has ended with a glorious and flurrious (flurry of meters, that is - this might be a new word for some  ) finish! We'll never think of canoes in quite the same way again!! We rowed an excellent Challenge - contributing more meters than we have EVER rowed in a challenge. Now we wait a couple days to see if the number tallies impact our current 4th place ranking - as meters will definitely trickle in from both our team members, and from other teams.

So, as we say....

Image

to a very unique Challenge, we also say congratulations for a well rowed Challenge to those we competed against! Great job by Overcoming Disabilities team in capturing 10th place (this might have just occurred on the last day!) - and second-highest average meters/team member in this Challenge.

A.J., Thank you for the ocean rowing boat. I feel like Roz Savage with a tan.
Cathie, I'm pleased you feel safer in your LUNA-tic ocean rowing boat  . . . I'm tickled that you showed your students the graphics :D .

Since you mentioned Roz Savage I need to say that her Brocade was one of the boats that I used as a reference to design the LUNA-tic Ocean boat (maybe your students can come up with a name for your LUNA-tic Ocean boat ?)

)

Image
If you're interested, your students can track their progress or leave them messages on the Atlantic Allum Cup 2011 website. (I'm sure you already know this, but I'm reporting this because I'm fascinated by the men and women who row across oceans.)

Image
Great idea A.J. :D It may be a Yupik sounding name though  . We do follow rowing challenges and the Iditarod of course. Too bad the iditarod runs concurrently with the March challenge. We could have our own little Iditarod rowing challenge. I have 2 very good friends who work check points.

92 Million Team Meters .... woot!

Woohoo! A benefit to the sub-zero temperatures: got to do the "make instant snow" experiment where you take some boiling (or really hot) water and throw it in the sub-zero air - and get instant snow. The trick is that the water has to be pretty close to boiling. Sublime!

Thank you very much Kona and AJ for all your efforts during the year, and especially during the JVC!

Congratulations to everyone for all the meters that were put in during the JVC - wow! (You realize that some of you are truly looney  ?)

Welcome back Gina, but, as been said, be careful to not push yourself too much too soon.

I always say that all numbers are good, but some numbers still seem to be more fun. After last night's row the last 6 digits of my lifetime meters are 111777. B)
