Thank you for your generous invitation to join the club! I'm trying to get in shape and am now looking to you for inspiration (no pressure). You won't even notice the difference my few meters make to the January team challenge, but logging meters for the team will help keep me motivated. Thanks again!

Yoda, a fellow space resident, would say there is no try, only do! I share your tall order this year....we can do this!

K2

Jan: you "shamed" me into finishing the 200k :). Thanks!

AJ and Jan: Getting the antler lights was even more compelling than the pin ;). Thanks for making this all fun, in spite of real pain in the end...

Team: you gals and guys rock! Without you all I would have not come close to what I have done.
Now I am ready to get on the January Team Challenge "slow and steady" ;)

Belated Christmas wishes to everybody! You were in my thoughts but did not get to the computer in time :).

For the New Year celebration I will take G&T, and champagne at midnight. Thanks Chris for taking care of us! :)

Happy rowing!

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 12.25.10

Post by Kona2 » December 26th, 2010, 2:40 pm

Image Our reindeer are now dispersed all over the world....until the next Holiday Challenge! The stable dust has hardly settled. In the continuum of time and space, the January Virtual Team Challenge is just days away. You're not automatically entered into the team challenge, though. While you're inputting some meters (hint, hint), take a moment to scroll across the top of your logbook to the teams section. Scroll down to The Challenge, and click on that link that adds you to our Virtual Challenge team.

How do you know who else is on the team? Once you've clicked on the link the ADD YOU TO OUR TEAM (shameless advertising, shameless), you'll see that your team is Luna-Tics and you can click on Luna-Tics. It'll pop up with our team...presently at 50 teammates for The Challenge. Faster links will be available from your Concept2 logbook page once The Challenge actually begins on January 1st. As per the way of the IDL, the Aussies will lead us off for The Challenge and then wait patiently during the final fast and furious 24 hours of the event to see what last minute meters we can row.

The time period between January 1 and January 15 is quite volatile. After January 15th, the team rosters are set - no additional teammates can be added, nor do they leave. This is quite a long time to be in flux, but is designed to address an issue that arose for several consecutive years. Some teams would add a whole list of people and meters in the last few days of a challenge....it was disheartening, and didn't reflect the spirit of a challenge.

Image Thwack!

I'm sure I heard the Galactic Gauntlet hit our team doorstep....Brotherjim's team, Overcoming Disabilities, has pitched a challenge our way for the January Virtual Team Challenge. Our Lunies Virtual Challenge Team is challenged to row three times the meter amount generated by their team based on relative numbers of teammates in each virtual boat....or dire baseball team admissions might have to take place. I would counterpropose that the baseball team admissions are between Jim and K2, and that the two teams are going to row like something was chasing them (because teams will be chasing us!) and see what the average meters per team member looks like at the end of the Challenge. Either way - we'll cheer each other onward!

Season meters as of 239/365 = 66,723,396 m

Total meters on the day = 173,367 m

Oars in space (participation) = 14 percent (not bad after a tough 48 hours of reindeer flight!)

Sounds find to me. Gloves are back on until then. Wish the Cubs would keep theirs on when they are in the field :P

Great job with all the Holiday Challenge meter achievements to the whole team. And huge thanks to K2 and AJ for keeping the reindeer herd organized and decked out for the final flight. What fun.

Now for the virtual New Year's Eve party, Keith wants one for each hand.

The bottle of Lump of Coal bottle says, "Much more than you deserve for Christmas this year". A product of the United Kingdom, "Yet another bummed-out holiday? Lump of Coal Dark Holiday Stout is liquid consolation. It's a deep, rich, sweetly rewarding stout to take the edge off of that grim family gathering, that cheerless annual festival of alienation. This brew is as dark as it gets, as black as the lump of coal you'll be getting for Christmas. Because, let's face it, you've been pretty bad this year." Well, he doesn't share those sentiments, but it is his second favorite stocking stuffer.

The bottle of Yeti is brewed in Denver, Colorado by the Great Divide Brewing Co. "Yeti Imperial Stout is an onslaught of the senses. It starts with big, roasty malt flavor that gives way to rich caramel and toffee notes. Yeti gets its bold hop character from an enormous quantity of American hops. It weighs in at a hefty 75 IBUs." "Untamed and Imposing", suggested food pairings are grilled NY strip steak, French Blue Cheese (Bleu de Basque), vanilla cheesecake and artisan chocolate. This is the one that won out as the number one favorite stocking stuffer this year.

The boys and I are still thinking about our selections.

Hi and holiday greetings. Kona, I think my sequencing meters are a sad attempt to remind me of school while on 2 week hiatus--------NOT  My knee has been bothering me lately and even after seeing the O.S. last week for a 3 month checkup, no relief. He said everything looks great, but even a winter cactus looks great, but does it feel good? He said it might be the cooler temps. Don't know, just know Jim is an excellent nurse , extremely patient with me. He may have missed his true calling, though he used to be a wonderful musician.

I knew I sensed the presence of royalty! :D Princess Bobbie has spoken! Whoop, whoop! Great to hear from you! Your numbers are a fine series - most things have to start with 1..2..3! No fun doing anything when in pain - you are a trooper! All meters are good meters - and it sounds like you are in good hands. Jim has many talents and a great family. Take care of that knee !

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 12.26.10

Post by Kona2 » December 27th, 2010, 2:30 pm

Image 5 days to the START!

New year brings new challenges, and new goals! Whatever your fitness goals may be, there's no doubt that rowing some each day will help you meet those goals! Two-thirds of the rowing year may be behind us, but the fast and furious row to the finish is ahead of us! It will be exhilarating! We have the January Virtual Team Challenge - a full month of checking the team standings multiple times a day just to see where we all can add a few meters (and those few meters will indeed add up and be important!). This is followed by a short breather....then the Valentine Challenge, where you'll have a chance to earn a valentine like no other! March Madness blows in quickly...a time when we thrive in our lunacy! Row at least 5K a day for 25 of the days of March...wowzer, mates, you'll be on the move up the honor board charts! World Erg Challenge begins on March 15 and runs til April 15...double duty for those meters! And when the final challenge of the year, the Global Marathon Challenge arrives in early April...piece of cake to get a half or full marathon in if that is a goal you share. Opportunities abound for participation!

AJ's busy designing a whole new series of fun graphics for the upcoming Virtual Team Challenge.....you'll want to earn these with your meters in the JVTC! Sign on....sign on....sign on! When you join our virtual team, we will (of course) try to persuade you to join our year round zany group!

I have found a couple of things that have made a big difference in curing knee pain.

First, take a look at the shoes you wear every day. I had chronic knee pain whenever I added exercise into my life for years, and it was only when I moved to wearing a good pair of running shoes full-time that I noticed a huge change. I have one pair for daily wear, and a separate identical pair for my jogging. I put an older pair on for rowing, as it does not seem to matter if the shoe has broken down for that activity. The big key here is to get a shoe that fits well, and offers you the correct support your particular foot needs, and also to stop wearing the shoes for walking and running as soon as they break down (approximately 300 miles of use). I can always tell when it is time to get a new pair for the daily wear pair because I will start to have constant knee pain, and the day I get the new shoes on it goes away. It is easier to monitor the jogging pair, as I always record the mileage I ran that day, and keep a running total so I know when I get 300 miles on a pair of shoes. I can't stress enough how important it is to stop wearing your shoes when their life is done - even though they still look perfectly good. I do have some shoes I wear for the occasional dress-up, but my lifestyle does not demand that I have to wear them very often, so I can get away with wearing running shoes pretty much full-time.

Second, taking more time to stretch before and after rowing - every time. Do a 5 min. slow warm-up row. Get off the rower and spend about 15 minutes stretching - touch your toes with legs straight; cross your legs and touch your toes; cross legs the other way and touch toes; you really want to make sure you stretch the ligaments and muscles that work/protect the knee, as well as the hips - everything that is connected to the rowing motion, really. It seems that tightness or misalignment anywhere in the body will either show up as knee pain or back/neck/shoulder pain in my experience.

Hope these ideas help.

And nice to have you posting - you, too, Rachel!

I've still got this cough. Going to the doctor today. Hoping it is not Whooping Cough which has been showing up in this region a lot since last winter.
