Image ....I'm pretty sure that Minnie is suggesting that we have a row-a-thon for a gazillion meters.....for the near future, this might be best possible on June 21st? Could you explain a bit more about the Row-Pro? I know they have free trial periods...

Meanwhile, the crew from the southern hemisphere has presented a new vocabulary word: whinge. Thanks for that! And thanks to Webster's.
whinge (hwinj, winj)

intransitive verb whinged, whingeing whinge′·ing

1. to whine

I've already used up my free trial of row pro, I'm not sure if you're allowed to use the trial more than once. I can maybe try and "trick" my computer though...

That is one inspirational lady. I whinge at the thought of biking to the grocery store...

And welcome back Richelle V!

To Whinge or Not To Whinge

That post took me right back to grade school and being told (years before Nike) to "stop your whinging and just get on with it."

And, there's always this to add to one's collection of useful (fictional) information:

Little Whinging is a town in the English county of Surrey. Little Whinging is the home of Harry Potter, the Dursleys, and Arabella Figg. Dementors attacked Harry Potter and his cousin here in 1995.

Brian and the UK whinge...

Good find also Bazzy - I can't remember the name of the guy who rowed something like 3 MM in one month for Breast Cancer awareness...Brian something....a year or two ago. He kept a blog about his experiences - quite emotional as he pushed towards what seems like 100K a day rowing lengths. And seat cushioning was indeed an issue for him as well as trying to consume enough calories for the effort. Wild Bill is almost rowing the same amounts with his 43K days just about every day! Amazing!
Good memory Jan - his name was Brian, and I found an old bookmark for his MySpace log here. It was a "melodramatic" end to an amazing month of rowing - and quite understandable in the context of what he achieved... an average of almost 100k per day... for a month...

Hmmm, didn't realise this was such a culture based expression...

Obviously we inherited it from the British Isles. I specifically won't take this opportunity to mention the old joke about planes arriving from the UK, and the whining continuing long after the engines shutting down... it just wouldn't be fair on an ex/ex/pat like Chris... :P
If I did happen to let it slip, she might bring up the whole convict thing... :o

Happy Friday-Saturday to the N-S hemispheres! Looks like this week was a bit more taxing than some in terms of many commitments outside of rowing! Still, we were surrounded by fourteen half marathons in the mix of things and picked up a stranded crew member to bring our total crew to 50. Comparatively, we were crewed at 34 last year at this same time. The average output per crew member last year at this time was 176K and this year's crew is roaring along at 232K. If you're onboard, we can always use more fuel !

Image

Season meters as of 42/365 = 11,618,450 m

Total meters on the day = 176,235 m

Oars in space = 36 percent

MILESTONES....Bragging Rights....Celebrations:

800K Dan
300K Mitch (you got here an hour or two before I did)

Dan 21,097 m
Darryl 14,335 m Image Any updates on the July 1 - 4 Quetico Park voyageur canoe spot? I might have missed this...

Tom M 2,250 m
Barbara 2,017 m
Mitch 1,212 m

And for those who are ever so close to some milestones....:

Image

Kiba 10,001 m to go to start the million meter countdown...
Tim 5,494 m to reach a cool half million
Dave H 4,351 m to reach 400K
Steven 1,000 m to reach 300K

So many celebrations to have! Have a fabulous rowing day !

Okay, Jean Valjean, I won't bring up that convict thing ... other than mentioning that I've found a rather nice South Australian Shiraz which markets here under the Wits End label of "Free Settler and the Convict" (I think it's Chalk Hills wine down your way in Botany Bay.)

I watched "Australia" recently ... did the Japanese really invade Australia, or was that just in the movie? (Thank goodness that Wolverine was there to save the day!)

....Hi Just27, well I guess it depends on how you define 'invade'. Many centres in the North of Australia were bombed in aerial raids, and a couple of midget submarines made their way into Sydney harbor, but inflicted only small damage. The general population knew very little of the bombings (in the north) at the time it was occuring as the government of the day suppressed reporting of it.

But in the movie it shows land based troops on 'mission' island; something that didn't occur. But hey....how was the scenery, vast open spaces to the North..

Good weekend to all.....some walking today (Saturday) and hopefully a better rowing week next week...total lack of metres for me this week!

I always regard the export of our better reds with grave concern (much less than the UK regarded the "export" of some of her finest citizens  ) however when I googled the US name of this Shiraz I was impressed to see how the "rest of the world" viewed it:
the National Capital Sommelier Guild wrote:..."The second white, Wits End Free Settler and The Convict, a Chardonnay and Viognier blend was full-bodied with tropical fruit and citrus aromas and flavours. Another good value at $13.95.
Those severe Canadian winters must have "blanched" the product quite a bit!

Not an invasion as such - however definitely an "engagement". I haven't mustered (npi- ) the intestinal fortitude to watch this yet... maybe wolvie's presence back then accounts for some of the mutant dingoes hanging around the uranium deposits up there!

Yep, that's a HM (3rd this year) with a short "just row" cool down afterwards. Got a PB at 1:28:49.4, my previous was 1:31:36.0 so I was quite happy with that. :D

I just wanted to break 1:30:00 but with 3k left to go I still had energy to spare so I dropped the split down to 2:00 to finish it off. Now my back is all sore, but it was fun to see how fast I could go.

Sorry Kiba, I could have been clearer... the wine review in the link was Canadian - and somehow (miraculously??) the red wine (Shiraz) became white (Chardonnay)... I was just "having a bit of a go" at the reviewer's error.

Dave G - congrats on the nice time!

I've been patiently waiting for the details Kona2. I have been notified that I will definitely be crewing on the first leg of this centennial voyage and that we will be paddling 100 miles in 3.5 days in a 24 foot, 9 person voyageur canoe: 15 miles late afternoon the first day; 40 miles the 2d day; 30 miles day 3; 15 miles the morning of day 4. I had to supply my passport number and lots of ID information, my assessment of physical condition and how much I paddle in a year. I threw in my rowing stats for good measure as well! I must have passed muster on that.

I did receive notice that our crew is to take part in a special Canada Day celebration in Atikokan (Ontario CANADA) and the local dignataries and the Ontario Minister of Natural Resources have a full slate of formalities I will have to be part of before we get down to paddling business. Here is the Canada Day Agenda....
Proposed Agenda for the Minister

Time Activity
11:00 *Arrive at Atikokan Centennial Museum (adjacent to the Canada Day Ceremony site at Legion Point), meet Mayor and Council
11:05-11:25 *Short Tour of Museum focused on the Quetico Centennial Exhibit
11:25-11:35 *Walk to Canada Day reception tent (50 meters from the Museum)
11:35-11:45 *Welcome Canoe Parade participants
11:45 – 11:55 *Welcome foot Parade participants
11:55 *Walk to log cabin for ceremony (40 metres)
12:00 -12:10 * Flag Raising and O Canada
12:10-12:30 Speakers @ Log Cabin..on front deck with sound system.
2 min Mayor welcomes crowd, presents gift paddle to local MP John Rafferty
2 min MP – thank you and remarks
3 min Mayor presents Quetico 100th Anniversary Plaque to Quetico Park….received by Shirley Peruniak-former park naturalist
------Mayor informs audience that there will be a Voyageur Canoe Launch ceremony at the River a 1:45.
------Mayor introduces Minister Cansfield and presents gift paddle.
3 min Minister Cansfield Speech
--- Minister Accepts gift Paddle and makes statement about Quetico Centennial.
----Minister Unveils the Quetico/Superior Historic Plaque
----Minister and Mayor Cake cut the Centennial Cake (thanking Quetico Foundation for providing the cake),
12:30 – 1:30 *Lunch, mingle, music by local country band The Gamblers.
*Mayor, MP and Minister to walk back to reception tent to see the first canoes arriving from the marathon race (approximately 1:00….ten minute advance notice will be provided.)

1:30 – 2:00 ---3 min Mike McKinnon, Head Chamber of Commerce (and organizer of canoe parade) introduces the Canoe the Heart voyageur canoe expedition and the 9 paddlers for the first leg.
---3 min nine crew paddlers read famous dates from Quetico Superior History from paddles.
----20 minute Voyageur Baptism Ceremony organized by Voyageur Wildernss Program Staff (Michele Savoie) for all Canoe the Heart paddlers and Minister Cansfield.
----4 min Minister extends advice and best wishes to paddlers (reading historic advice from the Jesuits)
2:00-2:10 Loading the Canoe
2:15 *Mayor and Minister walk to the footbridge (50 meters) to raise the US and Canadian Flags to start the international Canoe the Heart Expedition. Canoe paddles under the bridge.
2:15-2:30 *Minister walks with Mayor to the Museum and final thanks (50 meters)
2:30 * Minister Departs

So it sounds like I will have to do my part to be part of a parade, read a little history, get introduded, and get a Voyageur Baptism. I'm a little wary of the last detail, but hopefully it will be no worse than what the real voyageurs experienced.

Our day 4 happens to be July 4 when we cross the border back into the States at International Falls. I suspect there will be more formalities on that day, but we have not been made aware of them yet. 4 day old trail clothes would make quite a sight if there is another parade to be involved in!
