2k Test

Post by JimC » October 23rd, 2006, 5:21 pm

Hi All,

I'm posting my 2k times given my next week's schedule probably will not allow for a 2k test with a good chance to improve on today's 6:33. Since the website independent verification process isn't working, I sent the verification codes directly to Lisa & Bill.)

10/9/2006 6:38.2
10/16/2006 6:35.9
10/23/2006 6:33.3

The 2k today was trying a 1:38.5 pace (PM3 splits1:38.6/1:38.5/1:38.3/1:38.5/1:37.6, felt OK the last 500m).

Non-erging physical demands for my next week's schedule probably means I'll not get another good 2k test opportunity before the deadline.

Hope you all push your 2k limits to the max in your tests...

Alright -I did it, got it over with. I decided in the middle of last night that I simply could not bear any more speed work -it kills me (which unfortunately means I should probably be doing more of it it). So today was the day. Now I can get back into regular training, which after the past 2 weeks I'm very excited about.

15 minute pieces, hour pieces, even the Weiss anything but 3 minutes, 1000's and 500's. My body can't process the latic acid fast enough. It makes me feel sick and the day after makes me feel like I have the flu.
It's shocking what age does!

Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap!

The time trial didn't go so well today. I did better back in August during a controlled IP test starting out at 1:48.5 and negative splitting every 200m, getting 7:03.9 then. Today 7:04.5.

2184m w/u with accelerations in 10'
rest
2260m 2nd w/u with faster accelerations in 10'
rest

2000m 7:04.5

(200m splits:

0200m 1:46.7 35spm
0400m 1:45.7 34spm
0600m 1:45.7 34spm
0800m 1:46.5 35spm
1000m 1:46.7 35spm
1200m 1:46.7 37spm
1400m 1:46.5 37spm
1600m 1:46.7 37spm
1800m 1:46.5 38spm
2000m 1:43.0 41spm)

1520m c/d in 8'

Standard erg, 119df, 60 degrees, 147lbs. Simply put, I just didn't have it today. Not sure if maybe I'm a bit sick or having a bad case of nerves. My head just didn't seem to be in it, since yesterday. Had a bit of diarrhea last night (could be nerves), forgot to put my HR monitor on for the first time in 3 or 4 years (it felt maxed out, that's for sure), and I forgot to get the IND_V code when writing down the splits (I can take care of that when I get back home later).

The one positive I can take out of it is that my lower back didn't feel quite as bad as usual, even during the everything-I've-got-left sprint.

The glass half-full viewpoint is that it was just a bad day, and that if I can do 7:04.5 on a bad day that I've still got a sub-7 in me on a good day.

I completed mine Friday morning, but had forgotten to bring my card and could not get a verification V. Fortunately, my major witness, Xeno, taped it and posted it, so I hope it is legitimate. At 7:57.9, it was 3 seconds slower than my best time last season, but several seconds faster than what I did last year at this point in the season — even though I am training only 3 days a week instead of the 5-6 that I was doing last year. It is also 19.2 seconds faster than my very best time here at Big Pine. I haven't looked at the video yet. I will have to borrow a broadband connection for that. I am also almost afraid to after Xeno pointed out a lot of major flaws in my technique. It seems that I have a lot of correcting to do. I don't even have a record of my splits, so I will have to check out the video for that. All I remember is a slightly sub 2:00 for the first, 2:00.3 on the second, and negative splitting on the last two.

P.S. to JVB. Missed you at the club this morning. I hope that your test went well.

Bob, Xeno should still be able to call up the splits and IND_V code from his PM3. Send him an email.

Well done on the sub-8.

Cracking good rows, Jim and Bob!

Rick, I feel for you -- I've been ill these past few days with some kind of flu that sounds a lot like whatever's afflicting you. Rowed today with a not insignificant fever, looking (I hope) to qualify:

6:24.0 r31, splits 1:35.7 r31/ 1:36.1 r31/ 1:37.0 r32/ 1:35.3 r31.

2k tests are not recommended as cures for digestve-tract problems....

I can't get the Ind_V_ function to work on my Log; in fact, at the moment I can't get into my Log at all to verify that I've actually posted the 2k time. This is rather annoying....

Jon, Bob, Rick, Carrie, Peter and Jim. Well done, under for some of you, difficult circumstances. I got mine done Saturday morning. Got under altitude qualifying time by a bit, after some disappointing attempts on Thursday and Friday. Had nothing to do those days as the storm the east coast is getting now, left me with 25 inches of snow to be shoveled Thursday morning. (Tough toss up; erg a 2k or shovel 60 yards of two foot deep snow. I suppose a third alternative would be a hot stick in the eye.) take care, be safe. Live well, live strong. dennis

How time flies when you aren't doing a test!

Post by canoeist » October 31st, 2006, 3:55 pm

I saw in my in box that our 2K test is due by midnight tonight. Yikes! I haven't been paying attention to the team qualification requirements.

I have to confess, my heart isn't in to erging this year. If I qualify, I can't go. The toy industry does 60% of its sales in November and December. Being head honcho in a new toy company requires me to put my efforts into the business instead of into erging. (If you want to see what we developed to inspire kids to become engineers, see BridgeStreetToys.com)

My training has been geared towards rowing on the water this year and not the erg. We (CRI +50 men) had a fantastic row in an eight during the Head of the Charles nine days ago. I was in great shape and had a great row, but my erg times don't show it. I think that water rowing has somehow ruined my erg scores. I am up to 220 pounds for the first time in my life, but I can only manage to turn out a 5:17 mile for the international Cross Team Challenge on the erg. A year ago, I was about 12 seconds faster. Maybe turning 50 is like hitting the wall in a marathon?

Sorry about not posting more frequently. There just hasn't been enough hours in the day to stay up with the erging forum anymore.

A big "Thank You" to Concept for the T-shirt and allowing me to be part of the development squad - even though I haven't been doing my part of the bargain.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

As you post your scores, I've really enjoyed reading what was going on - good insight to what to expect on race day.
Congratulations and great work to everyone who has made it to this point!

I'm responding (finally) to you -Paul about about being so busy with business and not able to do a test piece or feel good enough about doing a test piece. . .

I can totally understand. It's happened to me every year until this one. Real life and guilt about doing something for myself and therefore leaving many other things undone always have intervened.

The biggest reason I've been able to see training through thus far this year is that I have a better staff that I can count on -makes a big difference.

It's still difficult to be consistent with training though.

Have a great holiday season!

Carie
