I did a 2k today as scheduled in the interactive programme (sic) — 7th week, 1st session. It was not intended to meet the USIRDS end of October requirement and was neither witnessed nor on a publicly accessible ergometer. It hasn't received a verification "V" yet either. Clicking on the edit button in my log book just brought up a blank page!
The result was 8:17.1. I have mixed feeling about this. It was sort of a crap piece and yet I fulfilled at least one goal, i.e. it is a PB for me here at altitude. My previously best time here was 8:18.5. It was also better than my Boston qualifying time at Long Beach in 2005, 8:19.7, but it would not be qood enough to qualify me now, since I am a couple of pounds into the HWT bracket, which required 8:10 for the last two seasons. It also beat my 2005 CRASH-B time, 8:18.1.
But it is not even in the same ball park as the times that I got at sea level in the 2006 season and I am still in the dark about how much difference 4000 ft should make. Whether or not I actually do the required end of October time trial or not is still up in the air. The nearest places where I could do it are at sea level, so that should help, but the logistics of making the long, round trip are discouraging. I haven't convinced myself that it is worth it.
I am also not happy about the execution of this piece; the split times are not at all consistent:
2:02.6/500. 31spm. 153bps.
2:06.6/500. 31spm. 153bps.
2:05.8/500. 30spm. 156bps.
2:02.3/500. 31spm. 156bps.
I was pleased to see that the rate was steady, but surprised that I was going at 2-3spm faster that what I would usually do for a 2k. The HR rate was steady enough, although I wasn't checking in in the middle of the piece — I just have these end of split values. I am afraid that the staff at the cardiology clinic would not approve. At least one of them didn't like the idea of my being in the 150s or even the 140s for a long period. My take on this is that 8 miinutes is not really a long period. I just don't know how the devil I am going to work it when I get around to doing another marathon.

I tried again after a few hours. This time I got the page, but it had a note that the verification wasn't working. This had happened before, so I just ignored it and went ahead with the regular procedure. Once again, it worked O.K. in spite of that note.
