Hi there,

Can anyone suggest a good rack to car top my single? I'm currently hauling it to the lake on standard racks. Also, is it possible to top a kayak at that same time as a single when it's fully rigged?

thanks,
Z

What kind of single? These Burham racks from Durham Boat Company are popular in my area. I have a Hudson rack that I bought in a pinch only to find out that my Van Dusen wouldn't fit in it. I modified it a little and it works fine now.

What are some of the better cars for carrying a single or double?

Sure a minivan will work as ghudler says. How about smaller cars?

I'm trying to figure out if I can do it with a compact sedan safely for years to come, or if I need to have a station wagon.

Thanks.

All the dedicated rowing shell car racks I've seen have a central connecting bar that attaches to an installed set of roof cross bars (ie Yakima or Thule). It's the connecting bar (with a padded strap on each end) that helps support the ends of the boat. The car length really shouldn't matter. That said, most states have written limit that nothing shall overhang the front or rear of the car by something like 4'-6'. A 27 foot long boat does that on most cars but I've never been stopped. I've actully put a double on the top of a mid size car, but with a double rack which is about 3' longer than one for a single.

I transport my single on a Honda Civic. I would feel more comfortable with it on a pick up or SUV where it is higher. One always has to be careful when transporting a boat but I wouldn't get a new car to do it.
