On the water we would row with a start (half half threequarter half full)
does everyone do the same on the erg?
preforming starts on the erg?

Well I do, but only in a race, not in training.TIMEFOX2005 wrote:On the water we would row with a start (half half threequarter half full)

Most people do as well, as they want to get the average per 500m down to their target fairly quickly and I believe that the venue racing software can make this a slightly slower process than on a single erg.

BIRC last year. Front Row. There is a definate start phase, and a very quick settle from these guys, much quicker than you would settle OTW where it is more important (psychologically at least) to get your nose out in front at the 500m mark.
Generally do the start, but then an instantaneous settle with out the full length wind.

You can't be serious!!!TIMEFOX2005 wrote:On the water we would row with a start (half half threequarter half full)

Comparing putting maximum spin on the flywheel on a stationary erg to excellerating the combined mass of body and boat up to optimum run through the water.
They are both sooooooooo different. You can't use the same approach for both. There is a lot more to consider than just slide length.
On an erg your using explosive power with a lot of upper body grunt to get the flywheel spinning up to your desired 500m splits on the monitor. Try that in a boat and it will just get bogged down in the water without much run at all.
The only simularity between the two for racing starts is that you want to have full slide length by the 5th stroke otherwise you'll get left behind.
In a boat you need much more finesse and far less grunt to initially get moving before applying full power. On the erg you can apply full power from the very first stroke and utilizing upper body strength will help rather than hinder a fast start.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.
