We have an Alden 16. The plastic trim that goes around the joint between the top and bottom isn't very secure. What's worse, it is all that attaches the top to the bottom.
A neighbor who used to build recreational motor boats says that the trim is worn out and he can get me a replacement, but the top is supposed to be glued to the bottom; the trim is just trim. Shells are outside his expertise, but he might be right.
Anyone know if they are supposed to be glued, or if it just the trim holding it together.
Or... if you know of a place where I might be able to get this information.

Trim comes off after a few years. If the hull and deck come apart, glue them together again.

Anyone handy with glass fibre and polyester/epoxy can do, but it won't be cheap to do a clean job and repaint.

Boat and canoe clubs usually have handymen available for repairs.

+1, but if you like the boat ask more than one boat/rowing/canoe clubs for a pointer to someone GOOD at carbon fiber / fiber glass boat repair (your Alden is Fiberglass). We break at least one shell a year, and do all the maint on 20+ shells EXCEPT for laying up fiberglass fabric. The repairs done in house for very minor hits (dinged nose) look terrible compared to the pro work. Major repairs (like when we hit a submerged log at speed and the skeg didn't break off, instead it got pushed through the bottom) come back much better. Not cheap though. And the guy who does the work has month to 3 month wait list.
