Howdy,

Newbie here.

I just purchased a used Alden ocean single and I am looking for information regarding its age and value. I have searched the Alden site and google but have had limited results.

First, it's says its manufactured in Oakville, Ontario by Luna Yachts limited. From what I have researched Alden is a eastern US company. What's the deal?

Second, what's this boat worth? It has wood oars and is in fair shape. The reason I'm asking is because I am looking to sink a few dollars into having the fibreglass bottom either redone, or patched. I don't want to invest more into the boat than its worth. I'm pretty sure I've done well on the purchase price ($150) but I am going to have to ship it 900 miles at a cost of $200-$300. Came with the rowing apparatus too.

Here are some pictures to help out with your ideas. Thanks.

Could be one of these:

Presumably the "rowing apparatus" is the inside shell, stretcher etc, which seems to be drop-in; though as is it looks more like a kayak.

I wouldn't trust it any further than you can swim, at least until you know more about it.

Yes, it is definitely an Alden Ocean 16...

Another pic for someone who may have comments re fibreglass repairs and value.

Are you sure it wasn't sold by Luna Yachts? Alternatively I have heard that Alden subbed out a lot of the manufacturing of their boats.

The most important thing with regard to the value is the presence of vertical bulkheads in the bow and stern. These created air pocket floatation chambers that greatly increase the safety of the boat. Some early Aldens did not have these. Seeing how a new one costs about $3000, it is worth repairing if it has the bulkheads.

Hi Paul,

Yes, both front and rear bulkheads are present. No access ports or drains though as shown in the ocean 16 manual I found online. Thanks for the advice, i think its worth saving this boat but im going to have to do it on a budget. I've contacted the owner of Alden and had a brief conversation, he seemed like he was willing to help me in getting this boat fixed up and will answer my questions in the new year.

Can't wait for the ice to melt, hard to think about that as it has literally been colder than the North Pole he for the last week.
