Alden 18?

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Alden 18?

Post by maestroak » August 22nd, 2016, 1:35 pm

I am looking at possibly buying a shell to get out on a local lake. My prior experience has been learn to row for a summer followed by rowing on most weekends with a Master's program where I did all sorts of boats but mostly quads with the occasional octo, even rarer double. I also did Calm Waters and managed to row in a single up there without getting wet. Any thoughts or recommendations on a shell? I saw an Alden 18 on row2k for a great price setup as a single with car carrier, so I'm thinking of pulling the trigger but if anyone has any thoughts I'm all ears. I'm 5'10", ~180lbs.

I have an Alden Ocean 16'' the single seater version. Forgiving knockabout boat. Plenty of displacement to handle your weight. The hull is reasonably handy for cartopping with the Rowmaster unit and riggers removed. Must be thousands of them on the Atlantic seaboard. Don't pay anyone's asking. Unless seller and boat have been out of circulation for 25 yrs., most aren't expecting much. I hate boats with "sentimental" value; only hypocrits put a price tag on memories.
