Tips on set/stability
Tips on set/stability
I have seen a lot of good info on general OTW technique but not much on maintaining a good set or stability. I have heard a number of coaches with their own favorites including "keep some weight against the pin" from Gordon Hamilton and going all the way back to "don't let your rigger rise" attributed to Australian Coach Steve Fairbairn. Assuming the basic stroke mechanics are sound, many boats are still faced with unbalanced crews (size, power, etc.). What have you found to be most effective to attain set/stability?
Re: Tips on set/stability
If its balance in a larger boat youre after (like in a 4 or an 8), then get them out in pairs and/or singles, nothing sorts technique out like small boat handling skills.
In general I would suggest doing a number of drills, for example pausing excercises where you pause at different points in the recovery, really demonstrates when you get it wrong (and the boat crashes down to one side or the other) and also when you get it right, might even help identify if its peoples hand movements off the back end thats causing the issue
