What's the best single for a lightweight male rower?
Re: Best single
That is an unanswerable question. It depends on so many factors including rowing style and personal preference and what conditions you are rowing in. The best boat may vary depending on wind, waves and straightness of the course. Any of the top quality boats will be more then adequate provided it fits. Technique is so much more important then which boat you use.
If you want a fast flat water racing boat, any of the following are popular right now and very well regarded: Fluid Designs, Hudson, Sykes, Empacher, Fillipi. There are many other that are excellent but a bit less popular: Vespoli, Van Dusen, Pocock. Win Tech is common and inexpensive (made in China). A builder in Florida named Sharrow (sp?) seems to specialize in lightweight boats but I don't know much about them. The Pinert 25 is a pretty fast very tough boat that is race worthy and in expensive.
If you want something more stable there are other options such as a Maas 24 (or Maas Flyweight if you are under 145). Pinert makes some good open water boats also.
You will find people that swear by any of the above.
That is off the top of my head I'm sure I left some out.

If you row in a river full of obstructions like logs, buoys, docks and such, best to consider a Fluidesign over, say, an Empacher. Fluidesign hulls are bulletproof. Empachers puncture.
