A step too far

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

A step too far

Post by Dino » July 3rd, 2021, 12:29 pm

This week I decided to challenge myself and asked to try one of the new boats that were only unwrapped a few weeks ago - and something way more racier than I normally use. Got out and back without a ducking :D but sheesh... it certainly found me out with my dodgy technique and body parts that don't function too well!

When I did get a good drive going it certainly flew along but that was too often punctuated by getting it all wrong
I shall probably give it another go sometime, but next week I think I shall retreat to the safety of something a bit more recreational if out in a single again!

Good for you, Dino!

I have a Maas Aero and a racing shell. When I want a great workout with no stress, sometimes far away from shore, it's the Aero. I'm getting more comfortable in the single but it's stay closer to shore and PAY ATTENTION. Like you discovered, it's really fast and fun when you string a bunch of good strokes together.

It's just practice, practice, practice. I do a lot of maneuvering (backing, turning, drills, etc.) to improve balance and safety. I hope to be racing it next year.

Stick with it, you'll be glad you did.

Good on you!

I have a recreational-type boat (Race1 Wavecutter) sitting on the dock in Sydney, and can't wait until it gets here and to get out. I've rowed some in Swift Coastal 1x and 2x, and have also participated in the 6 place outrigger canoe racing (my avatar).

Not having any inland bodies of flat water, I can only envy you in the fine boat!

Cheers Mark and pagomichaelh :)

I almost came a cropper after about 30 seconds when didn't give enough of a shove off and the slight wind pushed me back and the blade went under the pontoon! should have gone on the other side so the wind naturally pushes you off but was already taken.
I shall definitely give it another go sometime.

Nice stretch of water, fast boat, could be a little tippy, but you've got it all :D
I'm sure that great scullers are born that way, the rest of us just have to learn how it's done, and the only way to do that is often.
Keep at it, it'll happen.
