Transportation Olympic 8

Hi there,

I am trying to find some information regarding the transportation of the 8 man rowing boat. I know they are around 19.9m long. How were the olympic boats transported as they are above the normal length of a shipping container?

As per FISA, the governing body of international rowing, 8+ boats used in FISA events must be sectional, meaning they come apart somewhere in the middle. In Europe, sectional boats are quite common, while in the US they're actually fairly rare. The boats used for events like the Olympics can be transported in shipping containers because they are broken down into sections of shorter length.

The first thing to do is to check if the boat you are looking to transport is sectional or not. Then select the mode of transportation.

Thanks for the reply Armando,

We are actually looking to ship an aircraft wing which is almost the same length as a 8+, however, it's not sectional. We thought that rowers would know how to ship easily and cheaply; however, we now realise, we will need to find some other way of doing it. Thanks for replying.

In the US, all size shells, eights included, are transported on trailers. In the early days, extra long flat bed railroad cars were used. I don't know if those are still around or not. The trailers used currently can be pulled with a heavy duty pickup or van. Most clubs and schools have there own trailers. The trailer that my club had could carry several eights, with the riggers removed and stored in the middle of the trailer along with the oars. It takes a lot of care on the part of the driver, especially pulling into gas stations to fuel up.

I can only report what I have observed of US activities. The only international shipping that I have knowledge of would be new shells purchased from Europe by US buyers. These were send by the manufacturers or dealers in Europe by boat and picked up at at the dock with the trailer to haul to the club.
