Lowering center of gravity/hunching over?

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Lowering center of gravity/hunching over?

Post by TheRocketeer » April 27th, 2013, 11:11 am

I did something odd in a 1x yesterday - I lowered my oarlocks, and it seemed to make all the difference. It's really strange - I have been rowing on the highest-level oar position in the oarlock for about 18 months. Last night I moved one spacer on each oarlock to the top of the pin. It suddenly made my 1x set up, and it was a very smooth row. But it also seemed like I was hunched over for most of the stroke, which was odd. It didn't feel right, because i felt like I was working really hard to keep my hands low and my body in conformity with it.

The question I have is this: I can see why moving my hands lower would set the boat. But is it a good thing if it means that I have to feel hunched over? In my erging I try to sit up as much as possible, so it's odd to have the goal of sitting up so clearly at odds with the goal of balancing the boat.

Thoughts?
