Hey folks, can you maybe give me an idea how much noise the Concept 2 rowers make when being rowed hard?
I'm interested in installing one at home but am concerned about the noise it will make ...
Any help appreciated, thanks.

When rowing your hardest, it is kind of like rapidly turning off and on a vacuum cleaner. It will get in the way of conversation (indoor voice) and sound coming from electronics like your tv if your rowing with close proximity. Having one in your garage or in another room usually wont be a problem.

dg,
The model D and E are significantly quieter than earlier models. I row in the basement while my kid watches TV. She does have the volume up, and both of us can hear it (unfortunately...).
I don't find the model D to be as loud as a vacuum cleaner (but I have an old vacuum cleaner). I would say it is as loud as my washing machine when it is on spin cycle.
Certainly, people talking in the same room while I am erging have to talk LOUD.
I think the erg works fine at home, no complaints.

I have a model D. I think it's much quieter than both my vacuum and washer although to listen to the stereo I have to have the volume up a tad to hear while rowing.

Thanks all for the extremely swift replies. That is pretty much exactly the information I was looking for.
Sounds like I will probably be ok as long as I don't use it late at night.
Thanks.

I erg on the balcony, and one of my neighbours has complained about the noise when erging at night. We have arrived to an agreemant, so I don't erg after 23:00 now

And not faster then a 2:30 pace??
and your 2k time is??
Give your neighbours a try at/on the C2!
I know they will love it!!
Or start a new hobby,
motorcycling on the balcony?
Little houseparty on the balcony?
Or take my earlier advice:
Don't scream so loud whilst erging!
Or disconnect the flywheel! reduces the sound and gives a smooth workout
Have great weekend!!
happy rowing!!

Some great ideas there, Tyn!
I think I'll start getting the motorcycle up from the garage
Disconnecting the flywheel also sounds nice, I should have tried it before my CTC effort today...

Sooo... if I'm rowing in a room with the door closed at 4:00 in the morning... do you think it'd wake up people in a different room? I really want one of these, but the noise issue is the only thing that could hold me back.

I row in a room, at the base of the stairs, with the doors closed. It doesn't wake anyone up, or keep anyone from falling asleep, in the bedrooms at the top of the stairs. So go for it!

I've rowed my model D in the next room at midnight without disturbing my families sleep. I have rowed my model C in hotel rooms at night without complaint. Yes, I am addicted enough that I take it on the road with me when I work out of town. The C is noisier than the D. The family likes the D better since I generally row and watch TV with them in the evening or weekends. We do need to turn the TV up a bit, but not as much as with the model C. I should probably get the quieting mod for the C.

Our bedroom has two levels, and we sleep on the lofted top level. My Model C lives on the lower level, and my erging doesn't wake my husband up in the morning. Two things to note, though: 1) my husband sleeps like a rock, and 2) my early-morning rows are more like early-morning paddles, which definitely keeps the noise down.

Turn the music up louder so they can't hear the erg!

My office is in the room next to our Model E

When my wife is working out on it, and I'm at work in my office, I can't hear it. I can hear a TV on when it is at a moderate volume in that room, but not the erg. If you buy a new one, and keep it maintained, I don't think the noise will bother anyone.

Sometimes i like watching movies (action flicks, you know) while doing longer workouts on the erg (model E). The master bedroom is right above the workout room and my wife would be bothered by the TV rather than the erg. I got myself wireless headphones that allow me to row as hard as i want and still listen comfortably to the movie incl. language. That's much more effective than big speakers, etc.
