I too own a Subaru wagon and haul lots of building materials on the roof (lumber, sheet rock, etc) but only for short distances. I would be afraid to do long distance hauling on the roof, especially at high speed on the freeway. What about transposting it inside the Subaru? It breaks down and will fit quite easily (I have done it).
Good luck

I've had my rower in the back seat of my volkswagon passat (sedan).
Model C, took it apart at the junction of slide and flywheel section, then had to take the cross bar with wheels off the flywheel section ( 4 bolts) Transported quite well that way.
