am i hitting a plateau?

Post by ackkac » April 23rd, 2006, 9:02 pm

I am in my first year of rowing...I am 14 years old and when i first started rowing i was one of the best rowers, i weigh 110 lbs. and are around 5ft 4in, so i am the smallest one on the team. i am in a girls freshman eight boat. i feel like im kinda improving but that everyone is passing me by on scores and i am not getting as good as them. My score for a 2k is around 9 min...i want to be getting as good as the other members of my team and i am working as hard as them...do i have to work harder to get as good as them or am i restricted by my size?

Eat more (to gain weight and muscle mass). And pull hard. Make every stroke count. Size doesn't matter. The erg doesn't know how tall you are. Neither does the boat. Maybe consider doing some extra weightlifting on the side -- talk to your coach.

You are doing very well and deserve to be proud of your accomplishments.

Rowing is highly dependent on weight, and on weight in proportion to height.

Have you considered going out for track and cross country.

You're only in grade 9, you've got three more years of rowing and probably about 4 more years of growing. I'm 18 now and I've grown about 4" since I was 14. Just keep doing your best and you'll get better.

always take into account concept 2 ergos do not take into account power to weight ratio and bigger rowers will generally pull betetr ergos who might row slower in a boat than a smaller rower
