G'day,
I'm just about to start training for another erg marathon, this time using Eddie Fletcher's programme (http://www.concept2.co.uk/docs/training ... _guide.pdf), which is all based around heart rates.
For my last one I just trained like a bastard and pulled 2h 58m so I'm hoping this programme will help me make a big jump. Has anyone used this approach before for the marathon and has it worked for them?
I'm also looking at what heart rate monitor to get. It seems that Suunto and Polar are the best. Can anyone recommend any particular models within those two ranges that are good for Concept 2 training. I'm using a model D or E rower (depending on the gym I use).
Cheers,
Nigo
Erg marathon and Heart rate monitors
Hi Nigo,
I use both suunto and a Polar. I have model D ergs so I usually wear both HR straps.
The polar displays the heart rate to the erg and I capture all my rows in Rowpro.
I wear the Suunto T6 to capture data on the "wrist top computer" and upload o my PC for analysis.
I'd recommend the Polar assuming the erg has a receiver? See how you go and if you get really serious look at the Suunto T6, but that is only compatible with the Model D/E with a PM4.
You'll also need to get Eddie's Indoor Rowing training guide..
I train by heart rate.
regards,
Ian

Nigo,
I used Eddie's program last year for my first erg marathon. Worked great for me! Just over 3 hours in a nice steady 22-24 pace with HR right around 75-80%. Quick recovery, no residual aches or pains (get a Vespoli seat cushion). I was using it this year until about 9 weeks in when I injured my knee (menicus tear) and had to stop erging for about 3 weeks.
Mostly I erged my longer rows on my Model B at home but the 4x15' sets I would use a model D at my gym. I use a Polar M 61 that I got off Amazon about 3 years ago. No linking to PM2 or PM3 monitors.
I agree with Pioneer to read Eddie's Indoor Rowing guide and to follow Eddie's recs on how to determine pacing. Remember his 5k and 10k paces are NOT your time trial pacings!! Good luck...and let Eddie know how you do, he enjoys hearing the feedback.
