Hello,
I am a newbie to rowing and just picked a used Model B. It's a great machine and hope to get a lot of use out of it. The only problem is that there is some minor rust on the top of the monorail where the seat slides. I wanted to get rid of the rust by using a very fine steel wool pad. Is this a good idea or will I ruin the monorail ? What other options are there to get rid of the rust? I live in an environment which lends itself to rust and corrosion, so is there anything i can do to prevent future rust from getting on the machine ?

Thanks,
Mike

I think the steel wool wouldn't hurt the railing, but C2 can answer for sure.

You could also use emery cloth.

I use regular pure mineral oil on the railing.

You could try wiping the railing with this, and keep doing it until you get a clean paper towel.

Then most of the rust will be gone and the rest will disappear with time.

I'd keep a light coating of mineral oil on the railing at all times, and keep wiping it down completely every day until it shines how you want it to be.

The railing on my model B shines much more than the one on the model C.

The crome plated ones had the problem of inconsistencies in the quality of the plating, resulting in peeling layers of chrome and resultant rust. It is also possible that you have a stainless rail that was exposed to a more severe environment (yes, stainless steel can rust). In either case, buffing it out with some scotch brite and oil and then maybe a light coat of well rubbed car wax might be all it needs. We have stainless rails (and most other parts and instructions) available for the Bs. I'm home right now so not sure of the price. JonW
