Last year about this time I posted a question about travelling with my erg over the holiday challenge. I was living in a motel during the week at that time and ultimately decided against it.

Flash forward to this year and I am still in the same boat, minus the motel. So I decided to wrap the erg in a tarp and throw it in the back of the pickup. I padded some contact areas with cardboard. It survived, but there are some rub marks from the tarp. One bolt worked itself loose (300 mile trip) and another one I found was loose.

Lesson learned? Clean and dry departments were ok but I need to isolate it from vibration also.

Anything I am overlooking? Anyone have an extra all wheel drive van laying around I could use till christmas?

I travel with my Erg if I am staying away for more than 1 night (I swim on the <1 day days) There are a few things I do to protect the erg.

1, I close the dampner to 10, hopefully reduce openings for dust and debris. I wrap the the entire wheel in an old, long, scarf I have.

2, transport the erg with the handle out of the rest cup.

3, pad the underside of the wheel segment to stop the black plastic cover underneath from vibrating.

The padding is a good idea, I will try that. I think the bolts worked loose becuase I had it strapped down too tight.

This is really neat! (cool!, ingenious! inspiring?) and I love the picture of you using your erg inside!

Meters inside miles? Do you ever erg while driving?

Inquiring minds...at any rate looks like lots of fun.

Thanks for sharing it!

Alissa

Nice Van. Now if it was a VW Camper with split screen....then I would be drooling.

As for my vehicle. I am lucky to have a Ford Explorer as a company car so it fits in well. I do have to wrap the rear seatbelt over the seat to stop it sliding.

Nice van! That looks like an old sportsmobile conversion, I have lusted after one of those for some time.

I also sympathize with having a few extra bicycles around. We had my last truck set up for two bikes, sea kayaks and pulled our scamp trailer. But we sold the whole rig when we left alaska.

Well I will be done with the challenge tomorrow or Friday and then I have two weeks off. So I can stop hauling the erg around in the back of my pickup, but I will row less...

Back in the '60s I had a VW poptop. I loved it and would probably have gotten a used one but they stopped making them in the US in the '80s. I know all about how to keep an old one running but my significant other definitely didn't want to be fixing it all the time. I'm really just an old hippie.

Yes, its an old Sportsmobile. I changed it a lot inside (no tall cabinets). They are really pricy new which is why I got an 18 year old one.

grams
