I am having a great deal of trouble loading Firmware Version 90.
At the moment my PM3 is unusable.

Update Utility States:
ERROR: A USB connection could not be establised with the PM3. Please make sure the PM3 is turned on and connected to a USB port. If this error persists try unplugging the PM3 and reconnecting it to the USB port.

Note: I have disconnected all USB items. And I have tried plugging the PM3 into just about every direct (non-hub) USB port and rerunning the loader. Results are the same.

PM3 screen states:
Concept2 USB Flash Loader |
SN: 100019131
Rev: 230
USB Connected
Prior Exception 19376
App Error -6

If I press the "Change Display" button I will also see an ascending numeric count on the screen

Thanks for any help,
Joe

I had similar trouble too. My PM3 is for a C model and it turned out the batteries were flat. I installed new batteries and it loaded without any glitches.

QUOTE(tvcrider @ Nov 25 2005, 09:14 AM)

I am having a great deal of trouble loading Firmware Version 90.
At the moment my PM3 is unusable.

Update Utility States:
ERROR: A USB connection could not be establised with the PM3. Bob,
Thanks for the tip, but I doubt it's the batteries. Battery capacity read 77% before the PM3 went out to left field. Even if it was the batteries I believe the USB cable will provide juice for the download.

It almost appears that I have to reset the PM3 some how.

Joe

Try the following things:

1. Exit the PM3 Update application.
2. Unplug the USB cable from the PM3 and verify the screen changes to "USB Disconnected". Wait at least 5 seconds before replugging.
3. If your computer is running Windows XP then you should hear a tone when you replug the cable into the PM3 and the PC can communicate with the PM3 enough to recognize it.
4. If you don't hear a tone (or you can't see the PM3 listed under Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Device Manager as a HID (Human Interface Device) then likely the PC isn't able to communicate with the PM3. In order for the PM3 display to say "Connected' only 2 of the 4 electrical connections must be in place.
5. You could try removing the battery cover and taking out the top battery briefly and replacing it. This will cause the PM3 to reset and leave the special USB loader applilcation returning to the regular PM3 application (assuming hasn't already been erased during the update process).
6. If this works you could try to run the PM3 Updater again to see if you get the same results as before. If so then I would contact Concept2 because you may have something wrong with the PM3 USB connection that is not allowing the update process to work properly.

Mark

Mark,
I tried your suggestions, but it didn't make a difference.
My PC seems to correctly recognize the PM3 (HID).

BTW, removing the battery does not appear to "reset" my PM3. Once the battery is replaced the screen displays the same error information.

Darn! I should have waited until Monday to do this. I just started the annual Holiday challenge.

Thanks, Joe

Joe,

If your PM3 doesn't reset after removing and replacing the batteries it means that some or all of the previous PM3 firmware was erased. This suggests that the PM3 updater was able to communicate with the PM3 briefly at the beginning...do you remember seeing the Updater application on your PC saying it was "Programming Screen Content" in the little status window at the bottom?

This should be a recoverable situation. What brand of PC do you have? There are certain PC brands (Compaq, Toshiba) which have been problematic when communicating with the PM3 because of USB oddities. Another option is to gain access to a different PC and try the update. The other thing to consider (which it appears you already have) is to remove all USB devices including your mouse while doing the update.

Let me know,

Mark

Mark,
Yes, at the very beginning (my first attempt) the updater did communicate briefly with the PM3. Sorry, but I do not recall the exact message I received. I thought it was going to complete successful, but I eventually received a "time out" error message and obviously the updater and PM3 have not worked since.

I am using a 5-month old Dell Deminsion 8400.

I have also tried loading the Firmware from my son's IBM PC, but the results are the same.

Joe

QUOTE(mlyons @ Nov 25 2005, 11:06 AM)

Joe,

If your PM3 doesn't reset after removing and replacing the batteries it means that some or all of the previous PM3 firmware was erased. To those those that may have been following this thread:

After a post Thanksgiving discussion with Scott at C2, they will be sending me a warranty replacement for my PM3 and a return shipping tag for my original unit.
