Sadly too many of the message threads seem to turn into such negative exchanges between just a few people. For balance, how about a thread where we share our favorite positive and inspirational thoughts, quotes, and sayings.

Here's one of mine:

"Change your thoughts and you will change your world."

Norman Vincent Peale

Good idea Coach. Here is one of my favorites that I feel is appropriate for the many aging athletes among us:

"You do what you can for as long as you can, and when you finally can't, you do the next best thing. You back up, but you don't give up."

--Chuck Yeager, fighter pilot & first man to break the sound barrier, on October 14, 1947. From his 1985 autobiography.

Rick

Apropos UT2 training:

"Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly" -- Mae West

From the same source there's also:

"An inch of performance is worth half a foot or so of promises...."

Great idea Gus! Here are some "erg related" quotes I like:

Talk is cheap, time's expensive. -- Mary Chapin Carpenter

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; Nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. -- Calvin Coolidge

And one humorous one that I think about in the final 500 meters of erg pieces...

It's always darkest just before it goes pitch black -- despair.com

Ernie
Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings -- that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide. - Buddha
I always liked this one, and I believe it has been credited to Wayne Gretzky:

"100% of the shots not taken don't go in".

More than once, its made me try something I otherwise wouldn't have done.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, throughly used up, totally worn out, screaming "Wow, what a Ride"!!!!!!!!!!

Yoda

I think that what I like about rowing is the chance to be a hero. Every day in what seems like a very ordinary setting there are heroes in every boat, people reaching down to come up with that much more energy to make it work. I like that, I honor it and I think that is special in this world.

Tiff Wood, quoted in Halberstam, The Amateurs.

Hi! This is not quite an inspirational message but I thought it might be OK to post here. I have been rowing a Concept II for 20 years and I've accumulated 13,000,000 meters. I had a broken bone in my foot last year and could not row at all. Then my chain broke and I never bothered getting a new one. Well, I'm finally back in business today! My chain is fixed and I had successful surgery. I rowed a 2500 meter piece today, my first one in almost a year. It feels so good to be back at it again. It's going to take me quite a while to build up but, hey, I've got a lifetime! I look forward to logging in my daily results and becoming part of the Concept II community again.

Here's my favourite inspirational quote:

"In the long run, the pessimist may be proved to be right, but the optimist has a better time on the trip."

I'm not sure who wrote it but I'm certain many people on this forum could relate to it.

Keep it smooth, keep it relaxed
Roland Baltutis
