Okay, here's the story.

My girlfriend attends a local university, she is on the Crew team, I used to scull (a little) and had slacked fom it because I couldn't pay the membership for the club (locak city club). Her coach wants me to row for them and he mentioned I'd be Varsity if I was as good as she said I was.

My problem is consistency. Some days I am red hot, other days I make most novice rowers look varsity. I really have no clue what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

Get in your boat and do exactly what you know you have done many times before, which doesn't sound like it included much traveling in circles or appearing weak. The 1x is tough, keep the round side down and your blades up, show a bit of balance and you will be fine.

How are your Stroke rates on the Good Vs Bad days? Same or different?

I would have to say not to worry about it. Anxiety about this upcoming "test" will just make it worse on the day. And considering that rowing well on the water is all about staying relaxed, worrying is the last thing you should do. Just turn up friday, go out and enjoy it. A 5km scull is a long way considering you dont row regularly (or at least that what I got from your posts) so dont go out too fast, just settle into a nice relaxed rhythm that you KNOW you can maintain for 5km and let the boat do the work.

Best of luck with it anyway.
You are piling on the pressure for no particularly good reason, you've got a lot of time and room before you're "the best" (even defining what "the best" is, would be impossible anyway). No offense intended.

Stick with what you know you can do, and do it.

So how did you do ?

If you have not sculled in awhile, finishing 5k I would call a challenge, let alone a decent time.

Effort to keep a boat smooth and balanced on the water also detracts from power. Lean one side on the erg, no big deal. Lean in a scull, and you're in the soup.
