Training

Yesterday I did a 60min workout. My pace was average: 14500m, while my PB is 15080. That is understandable: it was warm and very humid, and it was my 2nd workout after a 3 week holiday.

The thing that striked me was my HR. During the session my HR increased from 140 to about 170 in the first 50min. I ended with a 1 min all-out sprint and finished with HR 183 (during 15 sec). I never saw 180+ HR in the preceding season, even during PB's.

Did anyone notice this before, especially after a few weeks off the erg?

My age is 46.

Tom

This is normal. Anytime a trained athelete takes time off for an extended period they will see an initial rise in hr during the first few workouts when they have returned to training. This usually lasts less than a week.

Jeff

I didn't think your max HR was supposed to change. In the recent handicap races, I set new HR maxes though too, from 189 to 190, then 192. I was thinking that I had just previously underestimated my HR max, not that it was actually increasing.

But I also wonder about the heat and humidity. I had never rowed hard before over the summer. That added stress and all that extra sweat could make your heart work harder and/or increase your dehydration during the row.

Tom,

I can't speak to what "normal" is, but I'm 39 and when I row in warmer, more humid weather, I seem to exceed my workout HR and my max HR rather easily. This is especially true after I take a few days off.

When it's hot or I've been on an erg break, I allow at least three workouts for everything to restabilize, regardless of the ambient temperature.

That's my inflates $.02

Will
