Hallo,

my son (nearly 16 years old, 75 kg, 185 cm, from Germany) will spend a highschool year in USA, from August 2005 to January 2006 (we already have a contract with a highschoolorganisation).

He loves rowing and has already won some prices, so he would be very glad to find a familiy where rowing is possible.

Could anyone give us an advice, how we might find a family nearby a rowing club?

Thank you, Michaela

Do you have a State in the US that you are specifically considering? The Seattle area has a ton of lakes and rowing associations. I am aware of one High School in particular that has a rowing team (Lakeside), and the UW and SPU (both Universities) have rowing teams as well = rowing is quite prevelant here. I can already think of 4 rowing clubs/associations in the immediate area (I'm sure there are more) due to the fact that many lakes and the Pacific Ocean are practically in our backyards here in the Seattle area = this area is a sailors dream come true! Back to your subject.....perhaps you could contact a specific High School that has a rowing team and coordinate with the staff.
Good Luck!!!

Hallo,

we already contacted several rowing clubs by email (there was a list with many highschool-rowing clubs in internet), but we never got an answer. We do not know why. Maybe our mail was handled as spam or there is no interest.
Is there another possibility to get contact to guest families?

My son has no favourite State in US, I think, he also would like to go to the area of Seattle.

Michaela

Maybe try to contact high schools with rowing programs? If you talk to the coaches they might know of a family willing to host for you. The North Eastern area of the U.S. (new england...particularly around Boston Massachussets) might be good, or Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania too. Seattle sounded good as well, and I know the Madison Wisconsin area is very rowing friendly. Some rowing teams and clubs in the Cincinnati, Ohio area as well. Good luck, and keep us updated!

(W-L Crew) One of the members of the boys' Lightweight Eight that took first at Stotesbury last year was an exchange student from Germany. He said he really enjoyed his stay, especially the opportunity to be a part of a team carrying on a 55-year rowing tradition. You can e-mail the coaches by going to this website. Coaches There may be a family in the W-L Crew Boosters (the parents' organization) who would be willing to act as a host family.

Porkchop

I would second northern virginia. There are a lot of really good schools with really good programs. I personally row for Forest Park High School, but if you're looking for a big name school, look at Washington Lee or even Thomas Jefferson if you can.
